Restrained nose at this stage, definitely not as aromatic as in my souvenirs. The wine is obviously at a very early window of drinkability. Even though I really think it needs a good 2 to 3 more years. On the nose, black currant, violet, pepper. On the palate, the wine is deep and layered. Yet tannins are still present and the mouthfeel is rather astringent. While drinking this already great wine, at each sip I couldn’t help wondering how tremendous …

Thanks to a Gangloff-loving friend, Chapeau tête russe and I (along with a few friends) were able to taste a magnificent vertical of Gangloff's two Côte Rôtie from 2011 to 2021. If he was always one of the best producers of this wine, by all accounts, since 2018 he has risen to the top three with the legendary Guigal (La-La-La) and Jamet (Côte Brune). Here are the latest results of the best wines only, updated. Barbarine: 2019 98 2018 97 …

A bit closed in the beginning but opens up with time in the decanter. Blueberry pie, olives, gingerbread dough, a bit of incense, just a hint of the meaty, savory tones which will grow with age. Firm tannins, balanced, rich, spicy, peppery. Very good, but will be better with more years in the cellar.

Torsdagsklubben: Fransk boksmat : Blind.

Wow, glorious Cotê Rotie from Gangloff. Intense medley of sour cherries, some blueberries, slight white pepper and other herbs. The palate is really intense with refined tannins, purity and power all very balanced. This will be exciting to see to develop over the next decades.

Medium/full bodied, elegant, fresh and vibrant, with a blast of olive tapenade, perfectly ripe cherries, flowers and black raspberries. This youthful wine is equally satisfying on the nose and palate.

Deep purple. Intriguing aromatics including a whiff of brett and intense violet. Bigger and rounder than either of the Rostaings, very fruity in comparison. Quite tannic yet a smooth feel due to the glycerine and oak. Excellent material, much more modern style but very attractive.
