Opened 90 minutes before and did not decant. Well developed tannins, tobacco and dark chocolate notes. Concerns it was too far beyond drinking window were misplaced. Excellent even still.

2/3, vg cork, decanted 1/2hr. #667,784. Medium/deep ruby/garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose slightly reticent but showing damson, mocha, coffee. Medium/full bodied, damson and dark fruited, quite soft but not overly rich, spice, mocha notes, fersh acids, good length ahrmonious finish.

Cork was a little crumbly but the closure was not compromised. Deep limpid garnet with a narrow clear rim. Nose was restrained - mellow oak and mocha. Lovely refreshing acidity with a sharp red cherry and tart blackberry gives way to a long silky lustrous finish. Tannins are so well integrated they are almost imperceptible. Delicious wine in a fabulous drinking window right now.

1/3, vg cork, decanted 1/2 hr. # 667,197 Deep ruby/garnet core, pale ruby rim. Nose is quite restrained, dark fruit, mocha, touch of coffee, smoke and spice. Medium/full bodied, soft and sensuous, plums, touch of blackcurrant, layered, nice contrasting fresh acidity, tactile with smoke and spice coming through on the good length finish. This is lovely and may well improve from here.

Deep, dense, red colour. Strawberry, cherry, creaming soda on nose. Rounded mouthfeel - red fruits, a touch of coconut from the oak. Lovey wine with slight tertiary notes. Lovely wine - drinking very well.

This has transformed in the last 5yrs - not much more body, wonderful ripeness balanced but nice acidity and rich mouthfeel. Almost like a good brunello with less acidity. Will cruise for another 5yrs easily

Red colour with slight brown on the edge. Complex nose - earthy, dark cherry and a bit of tobacco. Smooth in the mouth - very well rounded with red fruit and a touch of creaming soda. Lovely long finish with a smooth, creamy note to it. Drinking very well.

This wine has reached a lovely stage of maturity, with a soft velvet finish but still sufficient stuffing. Sometimes people talk about the Burgundification of Rioja, usually deriding such an evolution, but, if this is the result, well maybe it’s not such a bad thing.

Clear red colour. Black pepper and liquorice on nose and similar flavours along with a bit of earthiness and red fruits and a slight raisin taste at end. Drinking nicely and still very fresh. Long finish and opened nicely over an hour. Very good.

Still a fairly deep color, not showing too much age. Nose of sweet strawberry fruit, some leather and maybe a slight ferrous note. Touch of vanilla. Palate is dense with a lot of fruit and really chewy ripe tannin. I'd say this needs a couple more years.

Dense inky red colour. Raspberry, strawberry and a touch of vanilla on the nose. Red fruits and a bit of vanilla and sarsaparilla. Medium bodied, long finish. Enjoyable and still quite youthful.

Similar to previous tasting note. Still needs an hour decant. Decent performance thereafter. Nice fig notes rather dominant. Less flamboyant than the 2005. Classic profile. Very good, though I was hoping for a little more from this excellent vintage at this point. Perhaps it needs a few more years.

Very good description by Moods in the last review. Actually quite lightweight, with a very distinct raspberry taste after air that becomes gooseberry and finally cranberry on the fairly long finish. A decent mouthfeel but lacks complexity and just becomes tart and too acidic with more air. Fresh but simple. Quite amazingly non-existent mid-palate between plush entry and souring long finish. 60min double decant is perfect. Needs a good food match, not enjoyable on its own. Nowhere near the quality …

Sweet fruit aromas, not too much development. Mix of dark berry fruits. Some spice, vanilla, and cream on the bouquet too. Plus a good whiff of wood. Decanted 1 hour. Definitely benefited and was improving with more time in glass. Palate is fairly smooth, with reasonably fresh sweet fruit. Tannins are nicely melded and acidity lifts the palate.

On opening and this is volatile, acidic, alcoholic: seems like it needs air. Obviously Rioja: balsamic, some nice vanilla peeking through. Seems to be midway between traditional and modern. Delicious wine, decanted for a few hours first. Very well balanced in a more modern Rioja style, but not overly powerful in a good way. Beautiful balance of fruit and secondary aromas. It's ready to drink, but no hurry at all. If Waitrose UK puts this on 25% again I'll get half a case without skipping a beat.
