Hoddles Creek, 1Er Chardonnay, Yarra Valley

Screwcap, 13.2% alc. Medium gold. Lively nose of peach, pear, grapefruit, sea spray, and a backdrop of toasty, yet balanced oak. There is almost a minty coolness to the nose as well. Impressive depth and power on the palate, yet not heavy; refreshing acidity the counterpoint. Delicately juicy-fruited finish with some oak grip. Opinion: drinking well now and should hold for a while.

Well I have followed the advice of my prior tasting note of fours ago and come back in four years. It's ok, slightly coarse and slightly heavy. Definitely mature. I had hoped it might scale up but im not seeing that here. Just had a covid booster so aware it may have adversely affected my palate temporarily. Drink up with rich sauce lobster.

Screwcap, 13.2% alc. Pale lemon yellow. Piercing and refreshing nose of ripe peach, grapefruit, nuts, toast, a red fruited undertone, and flint in the background. Similarly fresh and zippy on the fruity and salty palate, yet starting to turn toasty. Dry and salty finish with some grip from the oak. Opinion: No shrinking violet here; it’s a rich and powerful Yarra Chardonnay in the prime of its life. Should hold for another few years from here.

Still plenty in the tank but drinking beautifully. Grapefruit and some biscuitty notes but everything in balance and softening. Length and very drinkable.

Screwcap, 13.2% alc. Youthful, pale gold. Retains a lime-coloured hue. Peach, melon, struck match, and nougat on the nose. Medium-full on the palate. Toasty and nutty through the middle before finishing clean fruited. Quite powerful in a way that the 2012 Giant Steps Chardonnays don’t seem to be. Opinion: Solid chardonnay. Drink now to 2025.

Top notch Chardonnay here, previous notes still seem about right. Right in the zone for drinking but in no way falling over. Really love 1er when it is on song.

My 300th note, yippee! Green gold colour. Reticent grapefruit nose with spicy high toned oak elements. Weighty wine, cashew, light lees, citrussy (grapefruit), strong acid spine, tight oak finish. Tastes like a 2 year old at 7 years. Nowhere near ready. Has a dash of sourness from unripe fruit. Will build over time but will never have 'creaminess' factor. Come back in four years. Suited to lighter dishes.

Good color. The nose is quite tart, bright citrus, not particularly expressive. Some quality French oak there as well. On the palate it’s better - nicely rounded with clean melon and cashew. Were they trying for too much “Chablis-esque” purity as was the trend, albeit with the oak (second and third fill apparently). It’s still very youthful so let’s see in three or five years with my last bottle. Either way still a nice wine, the only question is value …

What. A. Wine. Lovely ripe stone fruits and some citrus too, subtle nutty characters, a richness to the palate but without weight and hemmed in by delicious acidity. My only bottle, sadly....

Beautiful wine, strikes a great balance between elegance and opulence. Medium bodied and pale straw in colour, quite a floral and spicy nose, pretty in fact. Palate has a minerally, fresh edge with developing ripe stone fruit flavours, oak is a solid supporter to the fruit and texture of the wine. Transparent pale gold in colour. A little bottle variation amongst my stash, I did prefer the 2010 finding more fruit flavour to balance the oak over the 2012, however, a second and third bottle have confirmed the '12 is just as good. Big step up from the 2013 Estate tasted alongside. Subtle Eastern spice and intense lime nose. Fuller body. Complex flavours. Long. Surely approaching Australia's best (Giaconda, Art Series, Heytesbury, etc.) Better stock up before the price (c. $35) matches the others (c. $50-100+) 93-94.
