Drank too soon. By the end of the bottle it was opening up. It needed at least an hour to breathe before we should have poured.

The wine opens up with a nose of dark berries, vanilla, chocolate, and spice. The palate consisted of blackberry, some blueberry, and vanilla. When it was first opened the tannins were present, but over the 3 hours of drinking they really smoothed out making it a really pleasant drink.

Ripe plums, cherry, pomegranate, spice & touch of chocolate. A bit hollow, but soft and clean on the finish.

A well-made hearty red. A decent value. Should be a crowd-pleaser.

I have had basel before and very much enjoyed it. This bottle was nothing special. Average is the best I can give it. Hence the 78 point rating. Lots of oak, some fruit and not much balance. Again, IMO, other Basel bottlings have been far better.
