Jean-Michel Stephan Cornas

I liked this a lot. It’s very much Cornas by way of JM Stephan with the accent on the latter. On the nose you’ve got some of that black olive/sauvage Northern Rhône wildness along with black fruit and a bit of florals. On the palate it is light and sprightly, with good acidity and a suave mouthfeel.

(Au domaine) Les raisins proviennent de M. Barret, cornas d’altitude, c’est frais, « minéral », fluide, même si la vinification de JM n’utilise pas de contenants ovoïdes. Ce Cornas sonne bien naturel, avec à ce stade un peu d’acétate (et de vol’ à 70), mais cela devrait rentrer dans l’ordre avec le temps; c’est un rien rustique, frais, à polir sur qq années de garde. Fruits noirs, poivre, violette séchée, la syrah brute de Stéphane ne demande qu’à s’épanouir tactilement …
