This was a bit dull and flabby. The acidity and tannins never really turned the corner to hold our interest. Abv at 13% kept the heat away from this warm vintage and it was a perfectly fine bottle with a meal. Don’t see much upside here though.

Relatively roasted and ripe on the nose with raisiny blackberry fruit, smoke, clove and wet leaves but fortunately not syrupy or that sweet really. A very appropriate profile for Christmas if not what I am looking for in a Syrah. On the palate it is not massively concentrated but by Crozes-Hermitage standards it is ripe, dark-toned and undeveloped for its age. This bottle was slightly acetic which was a little off-putting, and shows pretty consistently with my other bottles a few months ago. Not really at the level of Graillot, with the solar vintage dominating most aspects here, though this is still unmistakably northern Rhone syrah.

Pretty consistent with my previous note. The solar vintage shows here and the fruit is pretty ripe to the detriment of some other syrah characteristics. Shows almost a tad alcoholic on the finish this time, with lots of plush black fruit. Given my prior note, I'm not sure why I opened another bottle of this, but it was on hand...

"I drank all the Giz" (Chicago, IL) : The ripe vintage I think made this lose a bit of the clean syrah character (and the guesses were mostly new world), though generally the grape was correctly picked out. Very much in the dark fruit part of the spectrum, with a slight jammy quality obliterating the meat and spices. For the price though, this is definitely some very nice northern Rhône syrah.

This bottle purchased before my tenure at Chambers Street Wines. Good cork with a fair amount of sediment on it. Upon opening effusive aromas begin to waft from the freshly-breached bottle. In the glass the wine displays a ruby purple robe with just a tiny bit of bricking on the meniscus. The nose offers a lovely mélange of dark fruit, violet, game and peppercorn aromas. The fruit is sourced from one of the most esteemed vineyards within Crozes-Hermitages, Les Picaudières, where a large percentage of the vines are from the 1930's, planted in high density, and the average vine age is around 50 years. The wine is fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, then aged for 15-16 months in a combination of stainless steel, old oak foudres and mainly used (5-10% new oak, the remaining barrels are 1-7 years old) 228-liter Burgundy pièces. …

Might be shutting down a bit? Not quite as ripe and big as when I had it over a year ago. In some ways a welcome change, but not quite as giving either.

Ripe, inky fruit kept in check by a strong stoniness and sizeable acid and tannin. Nicely built and seems to have the structure to age. Probably needs a few years to integrate.

A pleasant wine, warm and satisfying - would please a broad range of tastes. Blackberries, a little smoke. It lacks the kind of structure I like in a Rhone, but went well with cassoulet

Initially very Dark fruit apparent on the nose and beautiful visually but none on the palate. High on acid without enough balance, but after a couple of hours fruit started to emerge. Interesting in that the ripeness of the year seems packed in there but any lushness is not to be found at this point. It certainly has the structure to hold so I’d wait a year or two at this point and see if it opens up.

Very ripe, big wine, dark fruit, some chocolate, a little bit of fig, lots of soft tannins. Not unbalanced but clearly from a hot vintage. If you prefer more redder, streamlined, elegant Syrah, this is not the vintage for you.

Delicious. Pepper and purple fruit. Medium tannic. Going to drink with rack of lamb.

This hits the spot on a cold fall night. Bright red and dark berried fruit, smoke, saline/olive notes, and a savoury earthiness beneath, with some tannic grip on the palate and bright acidity. Not especially complex, but a really elegant, classically styled Northern Rhone syrah that worked well with pizza w/ sausage.

White pepper on the nose, dark berries but not really that much fruit, stone. Some tannin but not particularly tight or tough to drink. Medium acidity. Enjoyable now, probably even better in a few years.

Young Crozes Hermitage and St. Joseph (Dig Wines, San Francisco) : Deep purple. All blackberry and bootstrap aromas. Medium to full bodied, charcoal and herbs, very mineral, tannic finish. Like a smaller Hermitage. Powerful, serious, and young.
