Not to set a pessimistic tone straightaway, but this is a chronicle of the revival and resurrection of this 24 year old wine. Granted, the broken cork was foreboding, and the initial hint of the odor of slightly maderized candied cherry was off-putting, but other than the 1980s Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet, and a few other late 1970s California curiosities, this is my oldest California Cabernet Sauvignon in the cellar. The color is an impenetrable black cherry, with little red …

Nice nose of minty black currant and charred oak. Medium-bodied and silky. This is not as good as some others I've had from this vintage and winery. Too bad I believe it is my last bottle. Drink now, but in fine shape. 89 I should note the cork crumbled to bits and pieces upon removal.

What a great $20.99 bottle of wine. It’s been stored well with no signs of being anywhere near tired. I’ve got two more bottles and I’ll let them sit for another year or two.

Very pleasant to drink; the age is just right. Dark fruits dominate. Nice balance of subtle oak, slight residual sweetness, acidity and of course the fruit. The 2001 is better than some other years I've tried. This would be a great wine for a dinner party if I had a few more.

This was delicious. I think it is at a great point. Doubt it will get better but likely to hang at this tasty level for several years. Tannins are tame, oak is pleasantly in the background. Dark fruits predominate for me. Nice finish. Not super long, but quite good front to back. I've been mixed on Provenance wines from decent to delicious. This fits into delicious.

Celebrating at the Montage Laguna Beach; 12/16/2016-12/19/2016 (Laguna Beach, CA) : Purchased upon release and cellared under ideal conditions, this deep garnet wine was decanted and serially sampled over the ensuing three hours. Red currants, Asian spices, anise and earth aromas are followed by similar flavors. Full-bodied, fresh, seamlessly alcoholic (14.9%) and with soft residual tannins, it is nicely dense on the mid-palate and closes with a tart, medium-length finish. Although thoroughly enjoyable, this wine will not be getting any …

Splendid bouquet of cassis, black raspberries, and cherries with eucalyptus and Big Red gum in the background. Tensile, resolved, showing sweet, fruit flavors, wonderful spices, and a long, gravelly finish. At its peak.

Shared this wine with friends last night and we all found it still deep with a moderately dense nose. No signs of 'over-the-hill' except for a few sediments. I think it could last another year if need be. I do have a temperature-controlled cellar so it's been stored well. The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are very gluey slow. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells and tastes like forest floor. The body is medium. The wine …

From a bottle purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion, this deep garnet wine was double-decanted prior to presenting in single-blind fashion to our tasting group (Oakville, Yountville, Stags Leap theme). It was allowed three hours in decanter prior to funneling back into the cleaned bottle. The nose opens to show floral red currant, Asian spice, tree bark and earth aromas. Full-bodied and with medium acidity, it has flavors which mirror the nose. The tannins have mellowed and the …

deep cola color. Vanilla, slightly charred meat, mint, dark cherry and pomegranate on the nose. This medium bodied wine starts with cherry that turns into cocoa/dark chocolate in the middle and ends in a nice mixture of fruits, acidity and dark chocolate that lingers for a good 30 to 40 secs. Very nice!

This wine was fantastic. Did not decant but rather let it evolve in the glass. Drank beautifully over an hour. Great nose. Balanced and integrated tannins. It will easily cellar for another 5-10 years.

This wine was stored in perfect conditions since purchase. It was well balanced and had the structure to continue for a few more years. Aromas were not jumping out of the glass but the palate was complex and evolving including dark cherry, coffee, and spice.

Opened the bottle and let it sit for 3 hours. Tasted blind next a Santa Ynez area cab blend and a Sonoma cab. Most tasters mistook this for the Santa Ynez cab because of its fruit. That said, it is a very enjoyable wine with soft tannins and a little tobacco box on the finish. Not a great cab but a very good one that is a pleasure to drink.

This wine was double-decanted, allowing approximately two hours in decanter prior to funneling back into the cleaned bottle. The sediment was moderate. The wine was then served with grilled prime New York strip steak and consumed over 1-2 additional hours. Deep ruby/red robe with red rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense aromas of black cherries, licorice and spice. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity, big sweet tannins, well-integrated alcohol and flavors mirroring the nose. The middle palate is solid …

PnP, which was a mistake. Deep purple color. Reticent nose of casis and black fruit. Very dry on the palate at first, with dusty tannins. Good, but not offering much pleasure. Was much better on day 2, which my score reflects. Tannins had smoothed out and the cherry and black fruits were more layered. Very nice. Give this a good 2-4 hour decant before drinking, or maybe a few more years in the cellar.

This bottle was taken from my personal cellar (purchased upon release and stored at 55 degrees). The wine was decanted and definitely needs at least 2-3 hours to fully strut its stuff. Deep-to-opaque ruby/red with red rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense and still fairly primary aromas of black currants, licorice, dry earth and spice. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity, big sweet tannins and flavors in line with the nose. The middle palate is full and the long …

I bought four of these at the winery in2004. They were transported and stored identically. The first two I opened, back in January, 2010, were DOA. Not corked, not cooked, not oxidized - just DEAD! This one, however, was TERRIFIC, fresh, vibrant, with a ton of explosive red fruit. I've experienced bottle variation, but this was ridiculous. Great nose, great mouthfeel, and a long, fruity finish. Very well balanced, with ample - but not obtrusive - acids and tannins. Please …

SLIGHTLY better than the bottle I had a few weeks ago. Unlike the last time, I detected traces of coffee, vanilla, and earthiness. In other words, it was a little more interesting than the previous bottle. However, this one seemed just as tired, and the total absence of tannins and acids made it a less-than-ideal match with food.

Good color - no signs of age. Shy nose - just a hint of black fruit. Blackberries on the palate, but that's about all. No tannins and no acid, leaving the impression of sweetness. No complexity whatsoever. Medium body and a short finish. Overall, a big disappointment.

Stunning purple color, with a nose of cassis, licorice, black cherry, rosemary and dust. A classic Oakville Cabernet, with beautiful acidity, medium-bodied with rich cherry flavors. This is actually aging at a glacial pace. One for another decade. A powerful wine.

Loamy, roasted plum on the nose, also blackberry. Ripe black plum, and also secondary notes of coffee, leather. Tannins are faded, and this comes accross as somewhat syrupy, maybe a bit fatigued. I liked it better four years ago (but then, I was into big ripe wines then ... this is a bit ripe for my liking (although the real problem is the lack of acidity and tannin)).

This wine has lost a lot of the luster and appeal that it had about 2-3 years ago. It maybe be on a steady decline or just going an awkward phase. The nose has a lot more tobacco and wood than I remember. I do smell some mint and plum but not enough to wow. In the mouth it's really awkward with tobacco and tomato like flavors dominates. I pick up some currant and raisin flavors integrated with the oaky …

My first issue of Wine Enthusiast a few years ago had a cover story on 2001 California Cabs. I collected as many of the 90+ bottles in the under $40 range that I could find and I am glad I did.
