Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux

Rouget Cros Parantoux Dinner & Lunch with Montrachet to Start; 12/5/2025-12/6/2025 (Chicago, IL) : In Cros P flight, ex-Domaine bottle. I haven't tasted this since from barrel in 2010. Rich and explosive array of explosive red fruits, so well spiced and alluring. Elegant despite the near opulence, this will reward another decade in the cellar, but is a head-turner already now.

Heavy slightly stewed nose, smells like a warm year, compote and coffee - on palate deeper more black fruit, bit of anise, richer and deeper fruit than 2008. This is the heavyweight of the flight. Intense. Could age many years.

Enjoyed this bottle in Paris in April 2024 and it was exceptional with an enormous bouquet of bright cherry fruit on the nose and palate. Tonight’s showing was quite different. Pop and pour, which in retrospect was a mistake, however we did the same in April last year so go figure. The wine tonight was quite closed, immediately the nose was restrained as was the palate although the base fruit characteristics were still detectable. Perhaps this has entered a shutdown …

La Paulée - Malcolm (Malcolm, Nebraska) : The 2009 “Aux Brulées” pours a deep ruby color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe red fruits: Strawberries, blackberries, red flowers, smoked and spiced meat, minerals and fine wood. Opened at 10 am. tight at the beginning. Good tannin and not showing much. But at the 12h30 mark, wine starts opening, freshness, pure fruit and balance came to the rendez vous. Delicious

The nose here is very smokey, a bit too much for my liking but expressive overall with good depth around red fruit and earthy elements. No heat but I guess the 2009 vintage added to the torrefaciton notes.

With decanting this was already quite open. Seductive note with red fruits still and Vosne spice. Great density - much volume without weight. Shows 75% of its potential but love it where it currently sits.

Served blind, I guessed 2012 vintage. Oak is dominant at this stage, very youthful color, this shouldn't be touched for a decade.

Decanted for a few hours but still massive when we started lunch. Dark fruit, muscular structure. Sweet stems galore. Complexity all around, but you just feel like there is a reactor packed inside this bottle, but it has not yet gone off. Continued to improve over lunch, and the last glass was the best.

An absolute stunner, this Crox Parantoux has everything: It’s unbelievably complex, every layer of aromas is delivered in UHD, it’s incredibly intense and sexy, yet absolutely round and sophisticated. It can hardly get any better than that. 98 points easily. Wines tasted at Zachy's Chicago Watch Party (Formentos) : Classic Meo Brulees in every way and so true to the vintage. Ripe, forward and spice-filled in both the aromas and on the palate. No harm to drink this now, but it'll be better in 10+ years.

Zachys auction at Formento's (Chicago, IL) : Wow. The nose here shows some of the really ripe and complex earthy tones that you would expect from a Leroy. Silky and rich, with lots of spice and black fruit on the nose and palate. The ripeness of the vintage here shows, but despite the relatively more buxom producer profile, this wine still feels really much in balance. I would love to see this with more time.

Some Wine Tasted at the Zachys Auction (Formento's - Chicago IL) : Small glass. Very ripe black and red cherry on nose and palate with so much spice. Great weight and length, this is just hinting at the complexity that will certainly emerge, with just faint nuance starting to emerge and unfold today on its long finish. So much ere, I'm confident on 94-95+ point potential, 2024-.

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty - New York NY) : Small glass, brief note. Fascinating contrast to the 1996 just tasted. Riper and probably dense, but this is just a baby and the full breadth of its charm has yet to reveal itself. Great (also 95 point?) potential.

Opens up a lot after three hours. Blackberry, cherry, wild currents, grapefruit, wet stone and coffee, cinnamon and licorice, pickles and savory, violet and orange blossom, honey and butterscotch. Amazing depth, and every mouthful starts reserved but grows broad and deep, from the beautiful assorted fruitiness to a smooth, florally light herbal sweetness. Meo-Camuzet Cellar Visit and Tasting (Vosne-Romanee - Burgundy) : Barrel tasting at the Domaine. Sulfur was dominating today on nose and the start of the palate, so impossible to fairly assess. Great mineral textures from middle to end, with great spice on finish.
