From our cellar. Much better than the one I had 6 years ago. Definitely needs decanting - tons of heavy sediment. Beautiful bouquet on opening. First taste is a little prunish, but after an hour of air everything starts coming together and it only kept improving throughout the night. Medium body, classic barbaresco profile with cherry, truffle, licorice and smokiness. Well balanced. Still some tannins left to resolve suggesting this may have another 5-10 years of life left? I Question …

Pretty good showing, decent fruit and leathery palate, soft, faded after an hour or so.

Past prime, no rating. Decanted 2-3 hours, lots of sediment. Light red color with pronounced brown edges. Nose smells like tawny port with strong prune/raisin aromas of a wine that is too old. However, after an initial taste of raisins/prunes up front, a burst of silky red cherry fruit emerges on the finish. It certainly got better with air, but never came completely back. I bet this was a great bottle 3-4 years ago. Palatable, but disappointing it didn’t last …

Ruby red with slight bricking. Classic nose of dark violets, leather, dark red cherries and smoky herbs. Medium bodied palate shows good depth to the sweet and silky red fruits, brown spices, medium acidity, hint of tannins, resolved oak and a strong whiff of new saddle leather on the finish. Drink up.

The wine didn't show much on opening - not much nose, not much taste. However, over the next several hours, it showed its finesse, its complexity, its beautifully rounded full self. I tasted red currants and some cedar along with blackberry and some blueberry. We had the wine with flank steak but I think it would be even better with something like duck breast. The tannins are still very noticeable but have become rounded with age and provide a great …

Forum Reunion (@ WB) : Beautiful and perfumed bouquet. On the palate autumn impressions, some stable smells, autumn impressions, good acidity and slightly drying tannin. Good length. Really beautiful wine.

A conundrum....looks aged, smells aged, but still tightly wound and lots of tannin. Nice weight. It opens up a bit with time and a lot of swirling but not much. (85 points on opening, 90 after 3 hours) Fruit component stayed muted, primarily tasting oak, mocha, balsamic, dried flowers and tannins. Better with food than on it's own. Have one more will hold for a few more years. Not sure these will ever be as a great as WS said.

Deep ruby red in color. Lifted aromas of crushed dark red cherries, pine/menthol, leather and hint of dark violets. Lovely mid-weight wine that shows ripe red crushed berries, hint of licorice and smoky herbs with good acidity, fine tannins, resolved oak and a long leather tinged finish.

Nice brick color. Red fruit flavored. Short decant 1st night did not let the wine open fully. The 2nd night the wine opened up to be very complex. Deep earthy flavors and some noticeable tannins.

Dark ruby red in color. Slow o'd for about 6 h. Deep pitched aromas of ripe dark red cherries, licorice, pinewood and hint of leather. A very rich but polished palate follows through with a deep core of sweet reddish black fruits, some earthy notes, good acidity and fine grained tannins on the long finish. This is showing very well and is definitely made in a very modern style.

PnP from 750ml. I tried this wine years ago at Federal Wine, where they did a tasting and then left the bottles out for days (!) - arguably more approachable on Day 3 than out of the gate. You could do worse than to decant this for 6-8 hours, for sure! Still very young, vibrant, and tannic. If you love Nebbiolo, these are beautiful wines and quite good value for the money. Zero rush to open 2004s!

Decanted and poured about a 30 minutes later, this bottle gave an excellent showing. On this occasion the wine seems more forward on both the bouquet and palate. The aromatics shows ample dark fruit that is a combination of youthful and maturing elements. Floral, spice, tar and mocha notes mingle in the background to give the bouquet complexity and nuance. The color is a tarnished medium to dark ruby. The medium to full bodied palate shows good overall balance with …

Medium dark, muddy rim, red black core. Nutty, some sweet red berries, cherry stone sourness, not much violet, quite earthy. Massive tough tannins, finish is sharp, not pleasant, excessive. Appears unbalanced. Earthy red and blue berry, smooth, med wt, shows some devt. Tannins dominate.

Upon first opening, almost undrinkably tight. After one hour in a decanter it started to unwind a little... back in the bottle , to be continued tomorrow night

After a Roagna Asili 2005. - Refined and intense nose with lots of higher alcohols, between freshness and real maturity. Impressive mouthful with complexity, sweetness and tannin, much better than the Cotta 2004 drunk recently.

This wine provided another outstanding showing after about hour in the decanter. This begins reserved; however, airing brings out the best in this wine. This will benefit from a few more years of bottle age.

Medium red color. Aromas of red fruits, licorice, underbrush and rose petals. Ripe, medium-bodied structured fruit in the mouth with excellent depth and length. This wine was the exact opposite of the 7/21/11 bottle as it was a touch closed and reductive at first. The ample tannins softened with time and, after about 20 minutes the wine was delicious with my wife's grass fed grilled skirt steak.

Garnet color with a touch of browning around rim. Aromas of stewed red fruits, tobacco and oxidation. Ripe but slightly oxidized fruit in the mouth with good depth and length. This wine actually improved a bit with about 20 minutes of air and become moderately enjoyable. A big disappointment overall. Hopefully, just a bad bottle.

4 hour decant, served just below room temp. Deep by not opaque garnet. Nose of dried rose pedals, menthol, rust, under brush and spice. Full and Rich. Similar notes repeating on the palate with some tart black cherries perfectly aggressive tannins. The oak seem to be in balance for me, just a whiff on the nose if you looking for it, not slathered by any means. Great food wine, great wine period. Happy to wait a few more years before …

Decanted and poured, this wine begins with detailed, nuanced notes of roses, tar, red cherry, leather and earth. The bouquet displays pretty, expressive aromatics that begin to fade and become reserved with airing. The color is somewhat tarnished, youthful medium ruby. The medium bodied palate begins expressive and forthcoming. Over time, the forward natures retreats, leaving a unyielding, reserved wine. Tannins become forceful on the finish with airing. This will require at least a few more years of bottle age …

Decanted for 90 minutes. Dark ruby hue. Nose of tar and violets. Palate is lush and delineated, showing tarry flavors and deep cherry notes laced with freshening acidity and structured tannins. Long, feral finish with hints of soy and earth. Of course very young but a high quality wine with loads of promise.

No detailed notes. Tasted a few months back. This wine SINGS after about three hours of air. It is a beautiful, concentrated nebbiolo that rewards patience but will drink right now with lots of air. Easily a 94+.

wineflock-2004 Piedmont (The Matasars, Northbrook Il) : nose: soft, tight, and nuanced nose of roasted herbs, tar, red cherries, red florals and spice tones. Very good depth, but doesn't seem to be giving up too much at this time. Excellent underlying material taste: high acidity and tannins as would be expected with round tones of red cherries, sweet tones of roasted herbs, spices, roses and a touch of oak on the back end of the palate. The acidity and tannins …

Not very expressive on the nose. Much more happening in the mouth, with dark, brambly fruit, light tobacco and a faint herbal element. Good acid structure, yet still fairly broad on the palate. Very nice.
