High shoulder fill. Picked up cheap at auction after amazing ‘74. This showed it age, cork totally soaked but came out in 1 piece. Terrific expansive mint and wet forest floor nose, mixed with some tobacco notes. Fresh palate with repeating mint/eucalyptus notes and teriary fruit notes in the background. Palate is fresh and vibrant and doesn’t seem tired at all. Nice crisp finish, but doesn’t add any depth. More interesting than good at this point but is nicely balanced …

30x California 1978 : So many wines from this great Californian vintage at the age of 45 certainly qualifies as a “once in a lifetime” event. A few observations: 1) The quality was very high (almost all my ratings above 90pts). And only four faulty wines (2x corked, 2x over the hill/flawed, sadly those two were the Ridge Monte Bello and the Phelps Insignia). 2) The wines are ready to drink, the tannins have melted but the tension and freshness …

California 1978 (Zunfthaus zur Waag, Zurich) : Grand tasting of 1978 California wines, mostly from Napa. Main takeaways: i/ surprisingly high quality on average for wines that were not intended for such long-term aging with plenty of primary fruit left, ii/ but within the detail nonetheless a broad range with the worst few suffering from clear signs of fatigue while the best showed hardly age, iii/ top wines were Phelps Cab Sauv (97), Firestone Cab Sauv (95), and Beaulieu George …

1978 California Cabernet Horizontal : Not rated, the first wine in this tasting that I thought was really over the hill. Medicinal, wet wool and just too old

Completely spent. Some stains on the label and the cork looked like it had leaked sometime in the past. Hoping my other bottle is better!

Cork was hard to remove; decanted wine for an hour. Very nice full fruit flavors, soft tannins. Still in excellent condition

A 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon from Villa Mt Eden. Don't have a price quote for you, but their grand reserves range from $15 to $25 USD. Its 9 years old. I was given this bottle from my Mother-In-Law who stored it for several years. Its 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, and 2% Other. Aged 14 months in French and American oak. Has an aroma of moldy cork. Don't confuse this with a wine being corked, that’s something completely …

I wasn't sure about this bottle because it was sourced at an auction and the fill was upper shoulder. When cork was removed, which was in good shape, there was a horrible stench/funk that quickly blew off, not sure what that was about. This is a good, solid cab, and is not the reserve so I'd presume the best juice went into the reserve. Solid fruit, held up relatively well over about 90 minutes, not a whole lot of aromatic …

1974-1979 Villa Mt. Eden Cabernet Sauvignons blindtasted (Tom's House, Palo Alto, CA) : Group's #6 (my #8) – 64 pts; 1, 2, 1, 2 – slightly bricking garnet red color with clear meniscus; mature, stewed plum and oak nose; much tighter on palate than nose would suggest, narrow cassis and tart plum; medium finish

Delicious, what a surprise! Caught this one at the crest of the wave...not much on the nose, but full bodied, smooth w/cherries and dark fruits. Great price point @ $12.50/bottle.

Probably opened a little too early, but either way, not enough structure. After opening I felt it needed to be decanted, but after just 30 mins of air, it kind of fell apart. Lacking some backbone. Good flavors though.

This wine was gifted to me which I drank the day I got it knowing that it was allready over the hill, and which it was, Still drinkable, medium ruby with a rusty edge, the nose was lacking but pleasant with a meaty, kinda light earth and fruit tones, the palate was light and smooth with similar notes, short finish and no tannins to speak of. all in all it was pleasant with no excitement.
