Superbe+ (94)

The sommelier hesitated when I picked this wine, it is sometimes variable and he pointed to something else until we chatted and he offered to check condition first, top service. This bottle was at the top of its game. Deep purple red colour. Blackberry, steeped cherry, spice. Big and powerful. With air the heat is tamed, and it has a lovely balance. Top stuff.

First Barbera from Cappellano; overall quite nice; bright, fresh red fruit, some licorice and spice, floral. The palate is quite bright and juicy which helps to counter some of the alcohol. It isn't really noticeable even though it says 15%! Not the same level of depth and power as Conterno's Francia, but very good. Would like to try the Otin Fiorin Barbera.

Deep red-purple color; aromatic, black cherry, minerality, a purity to the nose; palate is full bodied, high acidity, high but balanced alcohol (15%), tons of primary fruit, black cherry, blackberry, a bit smoky, a bit spicy, fresh throughout; medium-plus length finish. I think Cappellano Barbera may be the most easily drinkable wine I've ever had. It's just remarkable, serious, juicy, enjoyable wine. 94-95

Very similar to my last tasting note. Exceptional barbera, 93. Update: It's just so enjoyable with food. I think this may win my most consistent QPR even though it's quite pricey for barbera. I would like this to be my everyday house wine. 94 Update: Note the surprising and INTENSE amount of sediment here for even a young wine. Definitely decant this and filter the last 1-2 oz of wine for sediment as it is impressive. A lovely, lovely barbera …

Deep ruby, youthful color; aromatic, black cherry, some schist/minerality; palate is full-bodied, exceptional medium-plus to high acidity, high 15% alcohol but very well balanced, plenty of primary fruit; medium length finish. Really exceptional barbera. These won't last until maturity in my cellar. 92-93 Day 2: Has a juiciness which is really drinkable. Fruit-forward, still with depth and complexity, quite remarkable. 93-94

Big juicy Barbera that had deep color and a concentrated nose and palette. The nose showed dark red fruits (black cherry), herbs, lavender, and a bit of spice. The palate had nice texture, great acidity, and a bit of tannin. A real treat, though could use a few years in bottle.

Nose was expressive and then elusive as it aired. Rich, liqueur-like fruit on the palate. Silky and in great balance. Presents itself as one of the most complex Barberas you may have. Finishes a touch astringent, but this is a young wine at 15% abv, in a primary state. I’ve read this is from sourced Roero fruit. They must be pretty hands-on to source fruit like this. The only Barbera of this stature I can recall having is Accomasso. Next …

Coravin. Deep ruby, youthful color; aromatic, black cherry, some schist/minerality; palate is full bodied, exceptional medium-plus to high acidity, high 15% alcohol but very well balanced, plenty of primary fruit; medium length finish. Cappellano makes a stellar barbera and this is no exception. When so perfectly balanced, the combination of rich texture on the palate with balanced but high alcohol and very high refreshing acidity throughout seems almost like magic... no other grape quite gets that combination to feel so …

Popped and poured, Cappellano’s Barbera d’Alba “Classico” is actually sourced fruit from Roero. The 2021 pours a deep purple color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity and moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with mostly blue and black fruits, some purple flowers, and after an hour of air, a Maillard reaction character that gives a rather remarkable note of freshly burnt, buttered toast. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin …
