. It used to be I would have told anyone they were nuts for opening a Gouges 1er (from a big vintage) at 15. No hurry, there’s plenty of structure, but the tannins are smooth and the fruit is on display. Black cherries, red plums, with earth and spice. Long silky finish. Excellent.A-

Earth and iron here with a classy mineral streak. Excellent Nuit St Georges 1er cru and drinking beautifully right now. This is one of the more impressive 09's I've seen, clean and great length. Great producer.

Still dark red, very clear in the glass, nose of red fruits and flowers with a touch of spice. Medium body and more red fruits on the nice medium long finish. Fine tannins, superb balance with good structure, a very "clean" NSG. Lovely wine!

Intense wine with excellent structure, both tannic and acidic. The dark cherry fruit on the palate is obscured by the tannin somewhat. Powerful body and muscular mouthfeel, mineral and lengthy finish. Quite good, probably better in a few years.

2009 Red Burgundies (under $60) (Chris's House) : These often take some time to come around, so perhaps it will get better. Or, maybe I am just making excuses. Light ruby in color. The nose has some nice cherries. Light bodied. It did improve in the glass a bit, but not by a lot. There is a bitter quality to it, that never left. At $55, I want a lot more.

La Paulée de San Francisco 2012 (San Francisco, CA) : This wine really grabbed a hold of Jane and I with its disarming leathery, earthy, funky character. Asphalt a bit. Palate is peppery and light, more green funk, finishes almost Rhone-y? Henri Gouges agreed this was the king of the lineup, and it stood out from the others. Not the most elegant, but the most memorable. 91/92?

2009 Red Burgundies - Pre-Arrival 1:30pm Group (Vin, Vino, Wine Palo Alto CA) : Funky, stinky nose like wet animal fur, that part I enjoyed. The flavor did not excite me, tobacco and tar and wool. Good but Not for me.
