10 years after Riesling tasting - 2015 (@Private location, Sersheim) : Glass: Zalto Universal Tasted blind. Wine opened a couple of hours before. One of the surprises of the evening. Clear, pale golden color. Deep, smoky and slightly reductive nose with lots of ripe stone fruit. Hard to detect as a Saar Riesling, the ripe, warm fruit suits the wine beautifully. Lean, precise, slight residual sugar. Good balance, long fruity finish. Full peak, makes super fun! 93

This is a GG despite the name in CT. Like oily gold. Dense, thick, broad rivulets. Kerosene, lychee, mango sorbet, limes, melon. Rounded, almost spherical on the tongue. White pepper reminiscent of G. Veltliner, but less aggressive (possibly a result of age). Complete and balanced. The wine has exploded after an hour into a real jewel, a precisely cut gem, a luminescent ray of joy. Divine nectar.

In its sweet spot. A classic expression of the Saar Riesling. Very pure and elegant. The great achievement for the basic Van Folxem range.

On the lighter and brighter side, a very fresh kabinet. Tangerine, apricot, citrus. Demi-sec, and with good acidity to balance. This is a really nice wine and at great QPR.

A Riesling from the VDP.Grosse Lage Wiltinger Braunfels and, according to the back label, this is a GG Riesling. Historically Volz was a separately named site within the Braunfels and considered to be one of the best sites in Saar. Van Volxem vinifies this plot separately, honoring the historical vineyard maps. Tasted in the Van Volxem 2015 tasting. 12% alcohol. Youthful and quite concentrated, medium-deep neon-green color. Rather sweet-toned and very slightly reductive nose with nuanced aromas of sugared lemons, …

Unlike typical Van Volxem Rieslings that are vinified dry, this Kabinett is a made in Feinherb (off-dry) style. Made from grapes sourced from iron-rich red slate vineyards of Gottesfuss, Klosterberg and Kupp. Tasted in the Van Volxem 2015 tasting. 10% alcohol. Very youthful, intense neon-green color. Sweet, fragrant yet slightly reticent nose with attractive aromas of apple juice, some peach candies, a little bit of pear marmalade, light waxy tones and a floral hint of apple blossom. The wine is …

Pale, lemon color. Still youthful but starting to show some development. Lime, fresh grapes, yellow apples and some traces of tropical fruits. Clay, basil and some petroleum coming through as well. Just a few grams of RS softens the razor sharp acidity. The fruit feels ripe but remains it’s fresh zesty feel. Great weight for being a mid-range, dry style Mosel Riesling. Long lingering zesty finish. This wine feels like it’s in the zone now but could probably take a …

Dinner @ Alo (Alo - 163 Spadina Ave) : From the wine pairings at Alo in Toronto. My favorite of the whites although it could also have been that this was just right what I was in the mood for (hot, still totally feels like summer day). It's got some nice acidity and just very fresh tasting. Crisp fruit notes. Dry. For my tastes this is something to be drinking now and not holding (but I find I'm more sensitive …

A four hands dinner (Joris Bijdendijk x Mitsuharu Tsumura) (Restaurant Rijks *, Amsterdam, NL) : Ripe fruit and spicy slate, lovely balance and energy, fresh and juicy, waxy intensity, tingling acidity, good length.

Interesting but not one of my fav Kabinett. A little too flat and not enough freshness.

Very smoky nose, starting with some lemon on the palate, light and spicy, very mineralic driven, ending with lively acidity, a good entry level Riesling, drink now and the next 2- 3+ years, **(+), 84-87

Now Van V. labels the Riesling bottles from Großer Lage (Burgundy GC) as GG, very balanced on the elegant midpalate although this bottle is still extremly young, volouptous ripe yellow fruit, above all peaches, well integrated acidity, in the background the mineralic punch, praiseworthy is the fact that Van V. achives this with a low ABV (hear 12%), really long finish, with this primary tasty fruit the Volz is delicious now but will benefit from a decade+ in the cellar, …
