Penfolds, Bin 2 Shiraz Mourvedre, McLaren Vale

Nose higher alcohol, some whole-bunch-like characters. Chocolate, high toast oak, ripe black fruits. Palate - lacking a real depth and concentration of fruit. Definitely darker fruit characters though, no real complexity.

Crowd pleaser - unremarkable but rounded, well-balanced and still showing a lot of fruit.

Het stormachtige weer van vandaag vraagt om een karaktervolle wijn met veel power. Deze blend van Shiraz en Mataro (Mourvedre) levert. Met 8 jaar op de teller nog geen vleugje vermoeidheid. Donkerpaarse tint. Neus met leer, tabak en wat aardse tonen. Wat eikenhout. Pepertje. Boordevol donker fruit in balans gehouden door stevige zuren en goed geïntegreerde tannines. Quite a dark, concentrated, plummy and chocolate laden nose. Fig jam, something a little industrial and smoky. Developing some tertiary notes - a bit of old leather and shoe polish. Full palate. Alcohol seems to poke through a bit - I get some spirity notes which remind me of grape brandy. Lots of ripe dark fruit and dried cranberry studded chocolate. Benefits from couple hours air. Medium purple in the glass with some edging. Nose is berries, dark cherries, capsicum and vanilla. Palate is silky smooth, fresh and vibrant fruit dominate front easing into a lovely liqueur and liquorice finish. Really nice blend.

Drinking beautifully- back to its roots as an " Australian Burgundy ". Very smooth. I did decant 90 minutes but of course no idea if that was the key. Definitely worth drinking now although no hurry as will still await you in at least 2-3 more years. Wish I had a few more on board!!

What a surprise. This is not a new oaked Penfolds style. A mature, soft, spicy fruit-driven red. Old school Aussie “burgundy”. Opens up with air, food, revealing new flavours. May all your bottles be this good! Cork.

Deep berry juice, dryer as I expected. Better as the 2016 I had earlier this year. Nothing mind blowing

Kryddigt och lite pepprigt! Lakrits, ek och läder. Bra tanniner och syra, men kunde vara lite mer fylligt!

2021 vintage

Ripe plums, raspberries and toasted spices on the nose and the palate. Linear and pure in its aromatic presentation. Rich and deep flavours from entry to finish. Full-bodied structure with tannins supporting the frame. Finish is somewhat dense and bitter for now. This needs an hour of decanting or 2-3 years of aging for it to shows it’s potential. Consistent quality year after year.

2021 vintage

Deep red colour, no bricking yet. Ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit. Some spice, a bit indistinct. Dusty/powdery tannin texture. Not exceptional but very drinkable and pretty good QPR ($A25).

2013 vintage

Ruby garnet. Has a bit of violet nose. Mid-full body, dark fruit, blueberry, coffee, chocolate, mocha, black pepper. Fruity forward but dry mid length finish.

Dark crimson color with no apparent bricking at the rim. Nice nose of plums, flowers and Asian spices. Delicious palate of dark berry, red plums, pencil lead shavings and minerals. Round and pleasing tannins. My only bottle, but it would be interesting to taste this vintage in a couple of years. Certainly drinkable now. Would go great with rack of lamb or beef kabobs. Cheers.

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are fast. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like raisin, strawberry jam, blueberry, raspberry, hay/straw, tea and honey. It tastes like lime, raspberry and blueberry. The body is light. The wine has juicy texture. The wine finishes short. The wine has high acidity. Very young. Needs cellaring.

2014 vintage

Rather lacking in aroma. However the fruit and super smooth tannins make it a pleasant mouthful. Add in the black pepper and dark chocolate components and the result is an easy to drink shiraz, not overblown, and actually better on its own than with the rack of lamb it was chosen to match.

Nice jammy dark fruit, a bit of menthol/eucalyptus, finishing with some black pepper. A nice Aussie Shiraz from Penfolds, well integrated and full bodied without the tannins being overwhelming.
