Dark berries, smoke, a little coffee, this is really in a nice place- tannins resolved, enough acids to make it bright and lively, develops some earth and mushroom aromas with time. B+/A-

My last bottle. Tight at first. A very savory, meaty expression of syrah to start that opens up to reveal some blueberry fruit.

Not a very good showing for this bottle. It was extremely tight and showed lots of heat. Having had a few very good bottles of this in the past, I'll chalk it up to being closed or flawed.

Mucho ESJ (Croton on Hudson, NY) : Tight and reticent initially, opens up with some air to show a dark fruited core accented by smoky, earthy and peppery notes. There's a fresh, high toned sensation to the flavours here and this feels quite light on its feet.

A bit closed at first, this opened up after about an hour to reveal aromas/flavors of smoked meat and dried pit fruits (apricots, peaches). After about 3 hours, a pronounced aroma of espresso emerged. Others have commented that this is on the downslope, but to my taste, this still has some years ahead of it. Delicious and at the opposite end of the spectrum stylistically from Saxum, Linne Calodo, etc.

My last one of these, and it was time to drink it. Past time, actually. There was a lot of bottle variation with this, and this was one of the good bottles. Very good, but just a little thinned out, would have been better a year or two ago. Solid California Syrah in a very Rhone style.

There's been a lot of bottle inconsistency with this wine. Overall a good QPR, and won't let my last remaining bottle sit too long. Sort of gamy up front, moderate acidity but a little more backbone wouldn't hurt. A little unfocused. Refreshing, a little earthy, in general quite pleasant.

Enjoyable, but wouldn't hurt to let the remaining bottles sit a year or two. Should have decanted. Really opened up just as we were finishing the bottle.

Deep maroon color. Expressive blueberry and cassis from the get go. Dark berry fruit flavors. Med-full weight. Good finish. Very enjoyable.

Until this moment, I had never met an Edmunds St John wine I didn't fall in love with. It performs like an under $10 wine -- OK but not much of anything. Unremarkable. 13.9% alc (D 5.5, F 4.4; SoPo)
