Winemakers Club Xmas tasting (Winemakers Club, Farringdon) : I was a real outlier in thinking this was unpleasant - but I found it green, herbal, tart and mean. Distinctive yes, but not in a good way. I just had a sense that it was lean and underripe- and while that led to some interesting (not necessarily pleasant, but interesting) notes on the nose, it gave little to no drinking pleasure.

Fairly oaky but not extracted, the style could be called Pinot-like. Charcoal and smoky Black Forest ham nose, not much fruit. Lean and tight, hardly medium-bodied. Lighter on entry but becomes a bit angular on the finish, it’s quite dry and acid driven. Could be a bit rounder, more generous and less oaky but its savoury character is appealing. It might even improve a bit with a few years of aging. 86-87p Read more: https://screwcapped.com/schiefer-blaufrankisch-burgenland-2017/

Pale colour. N: Medium (-) aroma intensity. Pleasant aromas of fresh black berries with plenty of black pepper. Not complex. P: High acidity, some unbalanced wild acidity bouncing around the palate. No real depth or complexity. Perhaps a bit more savoury, gravelly flavour, bit of bretty funk? But not out of control. Pleasant enough mid-week, easy-drinking wine that demonstrates some 'natural' influence.
