Great to taste a wine like this but it's definitelyy seen better days. The price reflects more its legacy value than what's now in the glass. It's ruby and translucent with amber edge. The nose is pale cassis, one-dimensional, slightly herbal. On the palate medium body, very soft fruit, no longer complex, a shadow of its former self. Short to medium aftertaste. It faded after a couple of hours. If you have any, don't drink it...sell it or donate it …

Three decades of Screaming Eagle : Still quite fresh and perfectly mature, even after two hours of air this didn't really budge. Nice blend of winter spices amd ripe fruit in the nose, wild red cherries and some black cherries mixed in, good minerality, great length. Delicious

It has clean and bold blackcurrant, cassis, cedar notes with well managed tannins. But far too ripe, pruney, plummy to my taste.

Big and bold with vanilla, dark currant, caramel and cinnamon. It had the finesse of the super high-end Napa cult but still not my style. Clearly disappointing for its price and pedigree.

Absolutely delicious. Still has tannins and excellent rich fruit. Should continue to drink exceptionally for 5-10 more years. Prefer the 1997 by a whisker

Very Bordeaux like, some sous bois and flint on nose , on palate tannins are soft , nice silky body, lots of fruit, hint of oak remains. Delicious wine. This particular bottle surprised me on how Bordeaux like it tasted

Deep garnet color. Very similar to 94 on the nose, less high tone, less red fruits though. Elegant, complex, mature notes. Silky tannins and great balance. Not much complexity and a bit short but classy. Drink up.

Not really where you would expect this to be, for a wine of this much fame, and fortune. The smoky, sweet, blackberry and cherry nose, medium body and elegant, finesse styled, even charming finish were clearly that of a good wine. But for this much money, a wine should be more than good.

Disappointing. Past its prime. Bland finish with little complexity.

Concentrated, lush dark fruits, with layers of secondary notes: soy, smoked meat, gravel and cacao among many others. In perfect balance with a satisfying finish that oozes finesse and beauty. What a treat.

Purchased in some quantity (and, I am told, at considerable expense) by great-uncle Alfred, presumably either under the influence of late-stage senility, or as a final white elephant with which to burden his family. He was, it turns out, a vulgarian to the last. I have tasted this wine now on a number of occasions, when morbid curiosity overtakes better judgement, and have found it in each instance to be an utterly common and tawdry affair, with a nose like …

1996 Cult Cabs : (decanted for a few hours and tasted blind) nose - delicious, smoky, slightly herbal. mouth - fruit punchy, raspberry, dark cherry, hint of herbality, good complexity. possibly the best of the wines of the night for food pairing

A perfectly good wine, but not aging into anything special at all. A Heitz Martha's vineyard 96 we opened right before this one was already more complex and interesting. There will be no contest at all in 5-10 more years.

I had the 95 Screamer a 67 Lafite,02 Lafite, 63 Latour, 86 Margaux to celebrate the blessing of the cellar and just to celebrate a good day. The wotn was the 86 Margie, screamer two and 02 Lafite was third. Got a scatch handicap when it comes to buying and collecting but I am a total chopping hack when it comes to tasting. The older 63 and 67 were well past their prime, 86 was superb and the eagle was …

Not surprisingly, this was unlike any other cab that this country boy has ever tasted. It brought waves of deep, rich cabernet fruit that was ripe but still very fresh with no hints of over extraction or over ripeness. The deliciousness of the fruit was supported by a complex mélange of herbal and floral flavors that were really shining on day two. The finish was just plain crazy with length and flavor and persistence. (I had read somewhere about the …

Probably not fair to say anything about this bottle, certainly not to rate. Decanted and it was cloudy and not good from the get-go. A major disappointment that something had gone very wrong here. I had read the reviews below and was anticipating an experience like the best reviews reported. Just goes to show you there can be a problem no matter what the price - fortunately I received it as a gift.

I have been patiently waiting for this wine to age to the point of showing its colors and I am not dissapointed. It is in a category by itself, which not not make it the best wine in the world, but it makes it futile to compare it with others its gets assocaied with. It is not like the other California Cabernet superstars such as Bryant Family, Abreau, or Harlan. The closest comparison I can come up with is Torbreck …

This offers notes of oak, cedar, spice, herbs and jammy berries. Soft and elegant in texture, with ample concentration, the wine ends in a plush, sweet, dark cherry finish.

90;72 90;72. Very dark but also mature looking. Extremely thick and coating the glass. Looked a bit murky. Extremely sweet, spicy and lively. Tasted almost towards a tawny port – high, intense sweet fruit and wood. I found it a fascinating and impressive wine but most people did not like it at all. Totally different than the other wines. 97p.

Part of the Screaming Eagle party at our house. Also tasted 1996 Screaming Eagle & 2001 Screaming Eagle. As controls we added a Mondavi 2001 and a 1996 Harlan. All wines were pulled out of the cellar at 9:30 AM, cellar temperature was 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Bottles were opened at 7 PM all bottles were immediately decanted. First tasting began at 8 pm. All wines were tasted blind for the first three hours and notes recorded. The wines were reveled …

Compelling nose of cassis, jammy berries, chocolate, blue fruit and plums. The palate is taken over by waves of plush, ripe, fat, sexy, round fruit. This opulent wine delivers decadent textures, power, elegance and finesse. What more could you want in Calif Cab?

What a disappointment! Decanted for 3 hours - tannins were still overwhelming. Also opened and decanted a 97 Araujo Eisele Vinyard Cab and a 2002 Beringer Private Reserve Cab. While the Araujo was a little better than the Screaming Eagle, the Beringer beat them both hands down. And at half the cost of the Araujo and one tenth of the wine bid value of the SE. We had a host of people try all three of these wines and the …

Cellar party for Bayfront Medical Center Foundation. OK, believe the hype folks. This wine is incredible. Decanted it for 4 hrs before drinking and it started to show signs of life. As the night wore on it just kept getting better and better. This is NOT your typical CA Cab. Very cool, restrained and shy, almost as though it's daring you to wait for it to come alive. No need to drink this up now, has easily 20 more years …

Dark red. Brilliant scents of roasted coffee (almost like a great Bordeaux) on the nose. Quite oaky. Sweet, charming, and seductive with great deisty and power, yet nice elegance. This wine is a delight, with a lovely dense core of sweet, chocolatey, ripe fruit, and a nice and balanced finish. Really excellent.

Screaming Eagle Vertical Tasting Dinner - '92-'99: Tight, subtle blackberry nose; tight, but well structured cherry, cassis fruit and strong tannins, secondary flavors of blackberry and eucalyptus; long finish (several of us noted, however, that it was the one vintage that seemed to fall apart with air time in the glass)
