This is drinking great. Very well balanced, fruits aren't thriving but they are there. Stone fruits and secondary notes of dried cherries and apricots. Old moldy cigar box with dusty mineral notes. Tannins are small and silky smooth.

Allowed to breathe in glass 2 hours. Clear deep dark garnet color. Initial bottle funk (volatile notes of shoe polish, meat juice and soy) blew off to reveal a lovely bouquet of dusty blackberries, black cherries and their liqueurs, forest floor, anise, coffee, unobtrusive spicy oak. Similar on the palate, rich, full body, nice balance. Improved with air, showed best on day 2, declined thereafter. A lovely Napa cab fading gracefully.

12th wedding anniversary wine tonight.....an old friend and controversial darling wine, from the WCWN days....use to be Savannah-Chanelle, and pretty much a one hit wonder in 1997. 12 years later...still as I remember! Very dark garnet, slight pink/orangish rim. WOW...total sediment...in my first glass??? Very Bordeaux-like....tight and dry fruit(currants, blackcherry, plum) structured and somewhat complexed with pencil, leather, green olive/tobacco, nice blackberry liqueur, coffee grounds. Still pretty spicy, and dries out quickly. Always reminded me of a young Bordeaux from 1999. …

Offline with Mike Opdahl (Sydney) : Apparently constructed from the declassified rejects of the better known Californian cult favourites, and evidently normally quite drinkable. Unfortunately, on this occasion it was anything but, suffering some kind of bacterial spoilage/travel disaster/infection, prompting Mike to reflect on his particularly lousy recent record with transported wines. A pity, as we see very few non-jug American wines in Australia, and I was looking forward to trying this.
