Christmas Day 2025: bright yellow color; intense bouquet of apples, citron, and honey; like soft apple juice in the mouth; with a mellow fruity acidity on the palate. 90-91/100

Initial rating 87: I was impressed by the power of this riesling a few years ago so kept an extra bottle for ageing in my cellar. Now, the "power" is still there but there's nothing left around the bone. No fruit, no depth, no complexity, just a thin, acidic frame. Likely past its prime (unless it's just a bad bottle). Edit: after a few days under gas, it felt like the wine was beginning to open up, so maybe it's …

Creamy with peach in cream, but also smoky with structure, very good, close to none petrol which I like in mature Riesling - very good tonight. The RS is perfectly integrated and an important part of the wine, very hedonistic.

Made with grapes sourced from Grand Cru Schoenenbourg. Average vine age 30 yo. Harvested between late September and late October. 13,5% alcohol, 6,5 g/l residual sugar, 7,9 g/l acidity and pH 3,09. Tasted blind. Pale lemon yellow color. The nose feels expressive, complex and very slightly developed with layered aromas of macerated lemon rind, some ripe appley notes, a little bit of steely minerality, light sweet white fruit notes, a hint of peachy stone fruit, a touch of beeswax and …

PnP. Color is light straw. On the nose: Lemon, orange zest, tropical fruits and petrol. On the palate: Honeysuckle, dirty honey, white florals, orange zest, apricot, beeswax and lots of salinity. This is a grown up wine and very nice.

Medium yellow. Classic aromas of Earl Grey tea. Medium to full bodied. Dry, lemony, and powerful but the acidity has calmed significantly since I last tasted this. Terrific Riesling still with a lot of time ahead of it.

Grand blanc. 94-95 pts

First time on Hugel and this impresses. Some have commented on it being a bit broad and flabby but I see a tension in this that’s alluring. There’s enough acid here to give it good length. And no doubt plenty of years development ahead of it too. Very enjoyable now but I’ll hold out on the next bottle another 4-5 years.

Medium yellow. Complex aromas of tropical fruit and early petrol. Medium to full bodied, glorious glycerine texture, focused guava fruit, stone, and crackling acidity. What a great dry Riesling this is and will be over the next decade! Just as driving and tart the next day with addition of faint spice. Really terrific and up there with the other dry Alsatian heavy hitters.

14.4° vol, residual sugar (g/l) 3.7, acidity (g/l) 6.2. Double decanted an hour before dinner. Less developed than expected, nice Riesling nose with pear and white stone fruits, on the palate first a bit flabby, gets fresher with additional air, nice bitter note, rich and long. Very good and has still many years ahead, 91-92, though quite pricy.

Four years after my tasting note on the 2010, which I liked but thought rather forward. This is a point at 10 years plus, and equally enjoyable. Grossi Laue was once Reserve Personnelle then Jubilee, Hugel's premium Riesling from Schoenenbourg. Balance, long and generous.

Wow! Truly great wine. Medium to medium deep yellow, a slightly shy but thrilling nose, subtle but complex, wafting stones, citrus and spice. Very serious concentration on the palate, from start to finish, really coats and saturates the tongue, and finishes long, clean and crisp. This is one of those sip-it-slow-cuz-you-don't-want-it-to-be-gone wines. At the same time chiseled and voluptuous. Winey, delicate, powerful, complex. Nose is expanding as it warms, happy just to smell. Greengage, lime rime, hints of white peach. …

Anderledes tung i munden.

Alsace Rocks! (Chicago, IL) : The nose is fresh, hi-toned and perfumed with lifted tones of red apples, flint, pears, quince, kumqaut, saline, crushed rocks, and a lot of white flowers. There is a lovely, seamless style that balances well right now. The Medium/full bodied feel is balanced and deft with mouthwatering, high acidity that leaves us with a fresh finish. This is really pretty and shows a demure and lithe side that has a bit of nuance.

Ljust, ljust gul i färgen. Smaken säger samma timida, men något förstärkta citrustoner.
