I just had a glass of the '08 Castell'in Villa, and the nose here is definitely more pronounced/interesting. Not quite as compelling on the palate as the first wine, but these are both good examples from a so-so vintage and pretty interesting to be drinking side-by-side. More red fruited on the nose than the Castell, with a little funky note as well. Nice.

Served blind into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Flower” day): Very ripe superior and highly detailed spectrum of fine spices that is a bit like a mix of lychee peels and white peppery spices. Clearly more powerful and darker red and black fruit driven. Good amount of very ripe tannins. Quite a unique style among the wines tasted tonight. 94 points. 2nd round (93-94): lychee spice and darker red and black fruits. 3rd round: remained very much similar to the first round.

In retrospect, 2008 and 2009 were pretty marginal years in Chianti - even top tier producers like Felsina released some pretty uneven wines. But you can still find drinkable examples, and this is one of them. Great nose here, with red fruit and sottobosco notes. Lighter-bodied with good acidity on the palate - this isn't a wine that will make you think, but it is a pleasure to throw back a glass or three.

Decent, although considering the vintage, pretty good. Good acidity keeps it lively on the palate, with ripe red fruit on the nose. Not overly complex, but a typical daily drinker of a Chianti.

More red-fruited on the nose than the Argiano I just drank. Tart red fruit on the palate - 2008, at least IMO, is a so-so vintage in Tuscany. With that qualifier, this is pretty good today. Leaner on the palate than the Argiano, but the acidity here provides some lift. Pretty good QPR as well.

On the palate, this is similar in weight to the Castell (and like the Castell, it has a slightly abbreviated finish). Earthy red fruits on the nose. This may be my least favorite of the trio, but still pretty decent all in.

Naso meraviglioso. Segue in bocca. I tannini mordono ancora. Dategli almeno altri 3 anni

From a bottle opened about 48 hours ago. Really in a good place right now, and considering the vintage, fresh and balanced. Bright cherry fruit - tastes younger than the vintage.

Bottiglia leggermente sotto tono rispetto alle altre, ma sempre un gran bel bere. Solo con tannini molto più presenti e meno risolti.

I've been drinking through a case of this over the years, which has been fun to watch the various iterations of this wine. Ripe red fruits on the nose - an effusive nose that definitely shows the vintage. Lighter-bodied, with decent acidity given the vintage. Very likable, if less than stellar, and a nice match for some gnocchi in red sauce with sausage. The nose here is a plus, but the palate doesn't quite follow through.

Lighter translucent ruby in the glass, with ripe red fruits on the nose, with soil tones in the background. Light-bodied, with prominent acidity providing lift - sweet and sour cherry fruit. I find that some Chianti Classicos can come across as flabby due to a lack of acidity at times, but this wine is lively and still seems young. Very good tonight.

Opened as a back-up to the over-the-hill Il Poggio. Translucent ruby in the glass, with tart red fruit on the nose. Nicely focused on the palate, with good acidity that frames the red fruits. Decent persistence - doesn't overcome the disappointment of the Il Poggio, but a very representative Chianti in it's own right.

Translucent ruby in the glass; nose is very open, with ripe red fruit and soil tones - nicely complex nose. Medium-bodied, with some spiky acidity. Better on the nose, with a little acerbity on the finish. I like this, but right now (popped and poured) it lacks a little "harmony", for lack of a better word.

Light translucent ruby in the glass; menthol and candied cherries on the nose. Ripe red fruits on the palate; I think the heat of the vintage has marked this wine, as the acidity seems a little deficient. Still acceptable, though.

Probably a shade lighter in the glass than the Caparzo I just posted about. Great nose here - red and black fruits soaring from the glass. Not as evocative on the palate - and lacking a bit in acidity, which probably reflects the heat of the vintage. Still, good if less than great drinking.

Very powerful and terroir driven Sangiovese. Definitely different, unique and above all complex. Dark and blue fruits, liquorice, cloves, cinnamon and black tea intensive aromas. Not full ready yet, needs minimum 3-4 more years to become round and smooth, but for sure it will be worth waiting. Great potential. Enjoyed in restaurant Bel Soggiorno in San Gimignano with pappardelle al cinghiale.

Translucent ruby in the glass, with a bright cherry scent on the nose, sort of candied, maybe like a cherry liquer - nice. Light-bodied, decent acidity, nice persistence on the finish, sweet & sour red fruits on the palate - very likable, IMO.

Dark ruby. Berries, leather, medicinal herbs on the nose. Rich core of fruit on the palate, strong smooth tannins, aromatic acid finish. A strikingly handsome wine. 50 + 17 + 16 + 8.

If my TNs are accurate, this is the first time I've had this since 2013. Translucent ruby in the glass; with ripe cherry fruit & menthol on the nose. Sweet/ripe red fruits on the palate, adequate acidity, nice finish. This won't be a long distance runner, but it is pretty nice right now and will probably drink well for the next 3-5 years.

Lighter in color than the 2003 Rancia. Wow, great nose, very "chiseled", red fruits, fresh & lively. A little more angular on the palate - no surprise given it's youth - acidity quite pronounced as well, but this is a first glass "sans pizza" - this is a wine built for food. A lot of upside here, and really a nice glass of Sangiovese.
