Was still fresh but tannins extremely soft. Aged characteristics that hide the origin in a blind tasting.

Brick red, rustic, spicy nose. Goodish weight and length. Fruit pleasant though did not develop in the glass so feel it is past its best. Enjoyable but no great shakes.

Sweet Grenache, kirsch, garrigue. Surprisingly light on its feet, not heavy or over the top at all. Agreeable but at the same time unexciting. A lonely bottle in the cellar.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1998 (Chez moi) : OK, but a bit austere - little brett, some fruit in the background, alive, but lacking red fruit to back up everything.

From a 375, first was totally over the hill. The second bottle is looking better but its certainly time to drink up.

I have only had the 1995 and 1996 previously. Both purchased and consumed upon release. This drinks much better, I think, than the original Parker rating. But, it brought back memories of those fruit driven Bernardines I had 15 years ago. It's elegant and completely mature. Lots of bricking. Med body, sweet pruney-kirsch fruit with some buried thyme, pepper, leather and mushroom. Alcohol is noticeable (probably a bit higher than the 14% indicated. It actually reminds me of a 20 …

Decanted for sediment and followed over a few hours. Nice nose of aged black fruit with some floral notes. Still quite young and dense in the mouth with baked blackberry fruit and black licorice. A bit of heat peeks through and detracts. This is nice and likely has many years of life left.

This is great right now. Early tertiaries, all the right elements. Savory. This is the first bottle of Bernardine that I loved.

Quite surprised at this wine's showing after reading CT notes. Dark color with some browning. Nice secondary notes on the nose. Quite rich, ripe, lush...expansive middle...quite well balanced. Lots of life..maybe a bit high on the alcohol scale, but balanced. Nice acid in the backend. Very enjoyable.

My last bottle. Sigh. My tasting notes from exactly a year ago remain accurate (see 6/4/11). Chapoutier makes wonderful CdP. And, it did well in 1998.

Decanted for sediment and tasted over a couple of hours. Savory nose of olive and iodine with hints of blackberry fruit and stewed tomato. Medium bodied with medium acidity. More fruit on the palate with ripe black plum, tart berries and several twists of black pepper. Nice acidity and some light tannins suggest this still has a few years left. Different experience from our last bottle, more advanced, savory and black fruited.

90's Dinner : Slow-oxed for about three hours before serving. Red fruited nose with v.a. Light to medium bodied with medium acidity. Baked cherry fruit, black pepper, cinnamon, sour cherries. Still pretty primary, but the spice notes add interest. Nicely balanced and drinking well now.

Opened an hour before drinking. Tinges of brown coming through in the colour and intense nose with dark fruit bouquet. Taste shows hints of peppery spice. Fruit comes through together with raisins. This wine is drinking well now but in my view needs to be drunk up - I can't see it improving further.
