Last wine of the evening so it was a pop and pour. Definitely needed about 20--30 minutes of air to smooth out and shine. Nose of darker fruits and earth. Spice, dark plums, leather, maybe a hint of black cherry and blueberry. Ok mouthfeel and finish. Was very popular with our group. Fairly big wine that is probably just entering it's prime time. One of the better Rioja I have had. nose was a little subdued or I might have …

Was a big hit a family gathering. Surprising amount of fruit after 16 years. The characteristic oaky nature of Rioja had dissipated, which was much appreciated. Will drink well for a number of years, but is drinking well now. Would have preferred to decant, but that was not an option at this gathering. Still, a wonderful wine - though likely far more expressive with more time to open up.

This followed a ‘meh’ 08 Levy & McClellan, so low expectations, I just wanted something to enjoy and decided to check in on the first of my ‘09s. I expect a bit of youth. Caramel, toffee, old leather shoe, dill, smells like a wheelhouse old school Rioja. A bit of cherry and more dill on the palate, just what I wanted, but there’s a ‘there’ there, let’s see what a bit of air will do. After 2 hr, this settled …

Quite bright and youthful, floral, red and black fruited. Austere I thought. Needed 30 mins to blow off the funk but then opened up nicely. Drinking well but lots of time in hand. Grainy drying tannins and alcohol very prominent

Nose shows coffee, black tea, ripe red cherry fruit, dried herbs – all atop a nice earthy base. Smooth tannins, fresh fruit and great tension on the palate. Needs 1-2h decanting to unlock sexy Mon-chérie notes and dark chocolate. Not a masterclass in precision and feels a bit heavy, but drinks amazingly now.

A wonderful Rioja Gran Reserva from Muga. My 2nd and last bottle, probably should have waited 5+ years more as the oak is still prominent and can integrate more. Still, a delight to drink. oak tobacco cherry blackberry plum balsamic

Corked snapped half, Durand to the rescue, thankfully the bottom half had full integrity. Gorgeous translucent crimson core, almost clear at the edges. Medium-light bodied. Red cherry, saddle leather, rustic earth, soy, peppery spice, mocha/coffee, ever so slight hint of dill and balsamic. Plenty of oak on the nose, but feels integrated over the palate. 93 to open. After 30 min, this hit on all cylinders. The edges are gone, silky smooth flow across the palate, an elegant beauty. Rosemary/sage …

Muted, opaque cherry red. Earthy, berry aromas. Smooth, elegant and a bit tannic (not a bad thing) on the palate. Black cherries, tobacco, cedar. Bitter chocolate on the mid-palate. Sweet tannins that could use 2 to 3 more years. Bright acidity, great balance. Finishes long, long with black cherries, leather and tobacco. Beautifully mature wine. Drink next 5 to 6 years.

Double decanted 6 hours before drinking. Medium ruby. Upon opening, a strong piney American oak imprint which receded to show more fruit jam. Medium bodied, excellent acidity, serious black fruit, some bitter chocolate, and dusty tannins. This is still quite a long ways away from full maturity but it is showing its stuffing and class. Better than I thought it was during earlier tastings.

I would not have guessed it's 20 years old. Visually still deep cherry red, and still robust on the palate. For me, the oak (I believe a mix of French and American) was initially overpowering, although as I sat with it I became more accustomed to it, and it seemed overall better balanced with red fruit and a little VA coming through. On days 2 and especially 3 the oak, fruit, and tannin has come together into a nice mellow …

One of my favorite Rioja producers, Muga and probably my favorite wine from them. 80% Tempranillo and 20% mix of Garnacga, Graciano, Mazuelo. Aged 36 months in French and American oak casks. Drinking very nicely at 16 years. Sweet toasted oak, leather tobacco cherry earthy balsamic dill

Deep garnet in the glass, packed with black cherries, baked fruit, cassis, chocolate/coffee, and a hint of clove. The tannins are firm but well-behaved, and the finish is long and smooth. Still fresh despite its age—drinking beautifully now but has more to give

Alex's 2025 Paulée at The Draper's Arms (The Draper's Arms) : Clean as a whistle, this has smoky cherry fruit and some hints of pickled walnuts on the multi layered nose. Palate is spicy youthful and well put together. Not quite at the level of the nose but I fully expect this to be firing on all cylinders in another decade.

[From magnum.] A *very* pleasant surprise to have this delivered to our table. Another old friend, this wine. Dark, almost blue. Leather, cloves, prunes. Always extraordinary, never ordinary. But so young! 2009 is young. Silky and impeccably structured. I've said and written so much about PE. Nothing further to add here, except that I need to come back to 2009 in 10-15 years, when PE enters its glorious phase of its 40-50-year journey. Nevertheless a great privilege to drink PE …

An aromatic and concentrated wine with dark fruit aromas and oak. Very concentrated, fruity and hefty on the palate, with sharp acidity. Impressive, and quite elegant for a Rioja, but compared with the other classic wine areas like Burgundy, Bdx and Piedmont these wines fall a bit short on elegance.

Park Place - Matsutaki Mushroom Dinner : From magnum. This showed well and youthful. There was a little oak, but I was pleasantly surprised that there wasn't more. There was a tart edge to the fruit, but I liked that. Well made. In this format, this will last a long time. I believe this was Eric's WOTN.

Decanted for 3 hours served at 19c. Perfect with roast Lamb. Such a well made wine gods nose of dark fruits without being powerful. In the mouth smooth with lots going on in terms of those dark fruits, green peppers hint of tannin . Reasonable length shows the tannin towards the end. It will last at least another 10 years but is certainly ready now and would expect secondary flavours to develop from here.

Hmm, not sure if I am loving the development of this wine. Last bottle 6 years ago and I loved it. Today this is still a good bottle of wine with plenty of fruit, nicely integrated tannins. But feels a bit like the alcohol is making its presence known a wee bit too much for my liking. Also the fruit appears to be going darker, the oak was a bit overbearing at the start but did blend nicely into the …

Paella Dinner in New Hope (Chez Walker - New Hope, PA) : This dinner provided a great excuse to open this wine. Classic old school Rioja that keeps improving with age. Decanted 2 bottles 3 1/2 hours prior to drinking. Deep garnet/ruby color, some tinning at the edge. Nose showing dark red fruits, leather and spice. Smooth palate of dark cherry, cedar, oak. Rich nose of sweet, baked black cherry cobbler, blackberry, spice box and oak. Rich and enveloping on the palate, this is dense and tannic with bright acidity. Flavors of black cherry and blackberry, coffee grounds with a bit of oyster shell salinity through the finish. At almost 20, this is still a youngster and in need of more time to become fully mature. Reading Offline #1 - Alino's Thames Lido Dinner - Mixed Whites and Reds (The Thames Lido, Reading) : The most youthful of our reds tonight, this has brooding almost young Nebbiolo like aniseed on the nose on pouring. Seems to be a modernist/traditionalist hybrid Rioja. The oak has integrated and is a fantastic counterpoint to the funkiness that has crept in with time. This is the product of masterful winemaking and one of the best Spanish reds I’ve tasted in a while.

Here I am on a rainy Monday with a fantastic tasting lineup, first up an 18-year-old Rioja. Medium minus aromas of Fall forest floor, black fruits, oak, and cherry. Medium Flavours of dried strawberry, dusty raspberry, rocket candy, something my palate gets with Rioja wines and a finish of sweet tobacco. A very comforting long finish with some medium minus dusty tannins.

Decanted 2 Hrs. Starts off a bit Bordeaux-ish aromatically; cedar, dark cassis, earth some mature French oak aromas. More classically Rioja once the drinking gets going with the telltale of dark berries, pronounced acidity, a bit of shoe polish / leather and the aforementioned of well-integrated French Oak. In a great spot and likely to easily hold another decade if not longer.
