Maison Champy Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins

Tight after opening, with plenty of acidity and tannin but a little short on flavor. Strictly a food wine I thought. But I kept half a bottle for a second night, and it then opened a good deal, with lovely, rich aromatics and a much richer mid-palate. That said, the balance still seemed a little off, with plenty of tannin and maybe a tad too much acidity on the finish. It will be interesting to see if there’s enough fruit …

Light Ruby. Spice. Good balance. More than a touch of oak -- as we often notice with this house. Vibrant. Decent finish. Very enjoyable over three nights.

Tart cranberry, spicy, smoky and oak. Tannin built to age.

Slight reduction initially noted on nose and palate. Blows off after only a few minutes. Nice Pinot nose emerges. Good fruit somewhat dominated by tannins at this early stage of development. Good acidity. Will benefit from cellaring.

IPNC Walk-Around tasting; 7/26/2013-7/27/2013 (McMinnville OR) : Tasting. Both red and black fruit with modest spice, good structure that's a bit dense now but with great energy at the conclusion. Very good 90-91 point potential starting 2017 or later.

La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Metropolitan Pavilion - New York NY) : Tasting. Red fruit aromas and flavors start-to-finish. Elegant, lacy start, more brawny on finish. Cellar for at least a few years.

Not an early drinker, despite the price. A tannic, brooding, classic Beaune 1er from a great vintage. If you don't enjoy stuff like this you hate Burgundy.
