Chateau Fonplegade Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Just barely drinkable, if one was truly desperate for a glass of red wine; I was not.

I've tasted this wine alongside the '05 Prieuré-Lichine during several days, both are terrific good wines, but the Fonplégade is the winner. The Prieuré is more refined, more gentle and has a tad more fraicheur and has a caressing and long aftertaste, smooth red fruit in the bouquet, gentle vanilla and wood, a concentratrd midtaste with ripe citrus , no signs of age, simply lovely. A terrific good wine, starting with high tones, red fruit and a whiff of vanilla, The citrus in the midtaste gives a super freshness and than comes the finish; a superb creamy impression, very smooth bitters and ripe tannins and a long caressing and very balanced aftertaste.

Popped and poured, did not decant. Dark chocolate, not a lot of fruit: some bing cherry. Tannins nearly resolved. I don't see this getting better, but it paired nicely with chili on a cold December evening.

This bottle was at the back end of it’s drinking window with dark cherry, a bit of chocolate & plum, some leather and stewed fruit flavors. Tannins completely resolved and super smooth finish.

Stewed fruit on the nose initially, moderate bricking, and a disjointed (almost chalky) texture on opening. Better after an hour, and best with a few hours of air. Some nice tertiary notes on the middle, but not much of a finish. I view this is a "drink NOW" wine, but maybe this was an imperfect bottle.

One-hour decant through a screened and aerating funnel. Blackberry aromas during decant. In the glass: wine is a clear ruby with no bricking and a small halo. Nose was wonderful: blackberries with stems, milk chocolate, stones and a little smoke. In the mouth: blackberries and plums, chocolate creme and some light Christmas spice. Moderately-long finish that reinforced the stones. Wine was quite smooth and silky in the mouth. I believe this wine still has some a few years left.

Not decanted but drank in a very leisurely fashion over 8 hours. Translucent jeweled ruby colour. Nose is immediate perfumed notes of Merlot. Palate is nicely rich milk chocolate and quite sharp, fresh blackberry fruit straight from the Bush. Nice tannic structure but young and almost inky. Is already open for business even without a decant if you like your Bordeaux youthful and high cheek-boned. Some length and resonance inside the head on the finish. Not a ‘keeper’ beyond 3-5 …

Same as my tasting note for this one on 6/29/2019, except I didn't decant and the mint on the finish is a little more pronounced. Drink this soon, don't hold much longer. Delicious.....

Breathe in the bottle for 30 minutes, then decanted for 90 minutes. Vanilla, blackberry, plum, hint of mild cedar and even less smoke, followed by a mild earthy rosemary that formed an interesting bouquet. Nice balance with some complexity. The tannins have softened, but will carry it another year or two. Good legs. Almost, but not quite, jammy ... Wine Boys - 2005 Bordeaux plus some Ringers : PnD 2/3 of the bottle let air for 1hr. Tasted blind. Clear medium ruby. Clean fleshy plum and tobacco on the nose. Fleshy cassis and cedar on the palate. Guessed Merlot dominant.

Wine Boys Brown Bag Mystery Tasting (DF's House) : PnD let air for 1hr. after slow Ox in bottle for 2hrs. Tasted blind. Medium garnet. Cassis plum and cedar on the nose. Cassis plum cedar and a touch of smoke on the nose. Still youthful with beautiful integration complexity and finish. Picked it out correctly from the line up. Can easily go another 5-10 years. First favourite of the night (out of five) and consensus pick of the night.

P&P. Very nice. Only had a glass, and I was distracted, but this is drinking quite well: A St. Emilion with decent fruit and a nice spine. Drink or hold.

Wonderful claret that still needs a year or so for the tannins to soften. There is plenty of luscious fruit here, so there is no worry that you'll be left with just wood and alcohol. The result is bound to be complex and delicious.

Un Merlot Typique, presque facile mais tout de même de bon goût. Un nez dense sur les fruits rouge, le boisé et le chocolat. En bouche, style moderne, c'est ample et satiné.Beaucoup de saveurs riche de cerise avec un boisé encore présent et une acidité assez faible. Longueur moyenne. Très velouté et savoureux mais manque de complexité.

Just starting to come alive, with its earthy, black cherry, plum, tobacco and truffle nose, the wine is soft, silky and packed with earthy, fresh, round plums. You can drink this now, or wait a few more years.

Decanted 2hrs but only had a a couple tastes. Vacuvinned and drank 2 days later and it was singing. Soft, lush and A touch more red fruit with even some tannin still around. Gonna hold the other bottle fro 5+ yrs

Deep ruby with purple color and a strong, licorice, coffee bean, black plum and mineral nose opens to an intense, full bodied, rich, round wine. This St. Emilion wine ends with a long, licorice, chocolate and black cherry filled, supple finish.

Quite a delicious wine. Sweet merlot fruit and oak show on the nose and palate to give a very modern profile. Even with the soft, approachable merlot style, this is surprisingly open right now. Not sure this has the complexity to be great, but it's very tasty. 92-93

This was the wine of the night for me, dark garnet with hints of purple, nose of coffee, earth and currants with dark fruit and spice on the palate. Long finish of fine tannins. Excellent wine, good QRP for a 05. Yummy!
