Bordeaux 1995 tasting dinner at Piccolino London EC2. This 50th anniversary edition can be variable as my halves have attested, but this was a flat out fabulous bottle with notes of soil, dark chocolate, minerals, herbs, brine and olives; it is svelte, weightless and ever so complex with so much verve and energy. A classical mature Figeac, which reminded me of the fabulous 2000

1995 Bordeaux (Piccolino Exchange Square, London) : Bold cassis nose, quite leafy, the two Cabernet grapes really show here, blackcurrant leaf but ripe crème de cassis too. Gorgeous. Big bold fruit, cassis, ripe still youthful, good tannins here. A hint of green just detracts a little but very fine all the same.

Ian’s 1995 Bordeaux (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London) : Attractive, complex nose, dark fruit, leafy notes. Medium bodied, black fruit again to the fore, fine boned, black olive, tobacco and tea notes, nice complexity, resolved tannins, fresh acidity, long harmonious finish. Fully mature, probably one to drink over the next 5 years. Outstanding.

Ian A’s 95 Claret @ Piccolino (Piccolino, Liverpool Street Stn, London) : Deep garnet. Dense. Quite a full, dense, mulberry with plum. Nicely smooth, fine sediment contributing to a soft velvety feel. Still some vintage grip. Length and breadth. Very decent. ****

This wine was all about finesse. I opened and decanted for 45 minutes before our meal (veal marsala w/ mushroom ravioli). The wine had an old forest smell upon opening put quickly blew off and became very fragrant. Our first taste was amazing with balance and precision. The fruit is still there but moved quickly into secondary and tertiary profiles tobacco and leather. The tannin structure has softened but still present. The wine was at its peak around 1 hour …

EH 20/9/2024 (Scopri) : Cherry and blackberry, tannin evident, pronounced but not drying, just more prominent than the fruit that is fading. Somewhat ferrous, softer fruit profile profile with earth and some tobacco. Looks left bank which is somewhat expected given the ~60% Cab Sav / Franc in the blend. Nice but a drink now wine.

Fully mature with some vestiges of fruit. I got my Bdx fix from the aromatics with lots of cedar, earth and tobacco notes. Nicely balanced with most of the action on initial entry through the mid-palate leading to a modest cedar-infused finish showing a bit of dryness on the tail-end. This medium-bodied wine is unlikely to improve further but will probably hold where it is for a few years still. An hour of air brought the wine to its best. …

Takes some time in the decanter to get going, but once it does it thoroughly beguiles with a fresh, minty, herbal intensity. Crisp, sappy, classy, lifted and intense on the palate with hints of lavender and eucalyptus. Lithe in structure but filled with an herb-infused savoriness that gives it a real presence. Very long. This fills up the senses while sustaining an admirable weightlessness. 93-94 pts.

20 Vintages of Figeac (1985-2019) : All wines tasted blind. A few observations: 1) Compared many other right bank peers, Figeac never fell into the trap of producing very high ripeness/high extraction wines. The low(er) Merlot content plays a role, but the wines clearly speak of a conscious decision of not going there. But in the 2000s the fruit profile is darker and only more recent vintages go back to the beautiful bright red fruit. 2) The hype is real: …

Clear garnet with a rusty veneer divulging its age. Needed about 30 minutes to deliver its full medium-intensity aromatics of sous-bois, iodine, tobacco leaf, and mushroom. Mid-weight tertiary palate with some mouth-watering acidity on entry, sour cherry and dried fruits on the mid-palate and a medium length grippy finish. Not a blockbuster but a very enjoyable fully mature wine which has probably past its apex and should be drunk sooner than later, IMO.

Chateau Figeac - 35 year vertical tasted blind 1985-2019 : The 1995 and 1996 (92pt) were served side by side. Both wines had good aromatics with earthy elements and sour cherry, wet forest floor. The 1995 really would need much more fruit to stem the wood toast and and dry tannins. A pity, this was not such a difficult vintage to master but the Manoncout family seemed to sleep on the switch in that period.

Popped and enjoyed with dinner and over a few hours. Satisfying and classic bottle of Figeac with notes of cigar, plum, and also some telltale green pepper. Good concentration and detail. Open and ready to go. This is at peak for me and I would drink these now.

I found the 95 Figeac a difficult wine to enjoy. It has a stern character and a relatively ungiving nose, making me work to discern blackberry and green pepper notes. Rather tannic in the mouth, rather short on the finish. A second bottle was flawed, cruelly removing the possibility of any added insight. If this is representative, it will take many years to blossom. 87?

1995 Figeac en Magnum. Surprise of the tasting for me. RMP initially rated it in the upper 80s. Gradually improved to 92 points. Garnet. Nose was typical Bordeaux with a green edge. This mellowed over time. Rich, mouth filling. I rate it 96. Tasted at BWE convention 2021 Wash DC

From magnum…. Absurdly good. Still tons of gas in the tank, but this is drinking at point. Complex, layered, fresh, green, seamless. Such a unique claret. Lightning in a bottle. I’m afraid to try another one as it couldn’t possibly be as good again.
