Cullen Wines Grace Madeline Cullen Vineyard

Heavy use of sulphur subdued the fruit and resulted in a rather sweaty saline character with a rather bitter finish. I was ready to completely write this off but as it opened up and warmed in the glass there were a few green shoots including notes of passion fruit. As it stood, I was unimpressed, however the balance and structure were delightful. The jury’s out at this stage.

Fantastic visit to Cullen Wines, pure Biodynamic and Organic, these wines show a certain style, and I would go as far as saying are not typical for Margaret River and are more stylistic. I appreciated the tasting and understand why they have a large customer base, but personally I found their wines showed a little too much texture and lacked a little brightness. Minerality, straw and grass early on the nose. As it warms up, tropical fruit and gooseberry notes start to come through, with some pretty strong lime in the citrus cluster. Slight oak and malo notes, but not enough not overpower the fruit.
