Largest Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche Vertical Ever (Monterey - New York NY) : In 17 vintage vertical, all directly from the domaine. Completely charming red cherry and berry aromas and flavors with well played meaty and spiced supporting roles. Textures might be the star here with everything in its correct place and the tannins now near silky. Great now.

rugged, intensely structured wine that speaks clearly of its vintage and site. The nose opens with dark cherry, iron, dried herbs, and a touch of leather—less about polish, more about raw mineral intensity. On the palate, it’s firm and still youthfully taut, with acidity and tannin holding steady three decades on. There’s depth here, but also a certain austerity—this isn’t a charmer, it’s a wine of grip and gravitas. The fruit feels slightly muted compared to the aromatics, and the …

Earthy and meaty on the nose. Beetroot and game on the palate. Fully resolved tannins. This is classic, mature Grand Cru red Burgundy. It might still improve, but this is in the beginning of its prime drinking window. His Clos de la Roche from both 1990 and 1993 have both been exceptional as they have evolved over the years.

In perfect shape in every way. Explosive fragrance of Pinot from the bottle as soon as the cork was pulled. Black cherries and cranberries, medium body with a subdued tannic finish and lingering fruit. The rich intensity of the wine didn’t fade over the 2 hours it was open. Worth the 30 year wait.

Double decanted to serve based on recent reviewer’s comment. Dark and brooding with dark fruit, earth, iron, cherry cola and oak spice. Palate is broad and deep. A classic Burgundy. Surprisingly young. It can easily age for another 20 years. 92+

Decanted for 2 hours. Served single blind in a tasting of 9 wines, my fifth place wine. Black/red with some onion skin color on the rim. Big nose, black cherry, cola, coffee grinds and some funk. The palate is big and ripe, very young with a ton of life, but more black fruit and the texture is not as silky at as the Dujac.

Dark and brooding bottle, somewhat closed. Good reserves of dark fruit here, still significant tannins, and ample acid across the palate. This bottle required a lot more time. 93+

This opens up with stunning gingerbread, red cherries and even quite some cassis; there is beautiful intensity and tension on nose and palate as well, it's still incredibly fresh and balanced and feels just very complete overall. Texturally this is a real marvel, but the finish could be more extensive. A great burgundy at its peak. 17.5/20

As some bottles do, this one displayed a good amount of acid. With less corresponding fruit. 92-93

A good bottle, that some of us felt showed it's vintage character (i.e. a touch unyielding). But it was only a touch, and this really was an enjoyable drink.

In a flight of lignier (91, 93, 96, 01, 02) and Dujac CDLR, I thought this was good, but didn’t enjoy as much as some others. Complex dark and red fruit, it had a little of the dank 93 character I don’t enjoy. It was a bit muddled in color too. Alan loved this and got me to retry, the power of suggestion might have boosted my rating by a point. Better than the 93 Dujac CDLR last night, but …

Zachys La Paulée BYO Dinner (Lafayette NYC) : 93 Horizontal. Wow, the nose is so bright, pure and intense. The palate follows suit and is so silky and texturally complex. Long, flavorful finish.

Zachys La Paulée "Warm-up" Dinner (Lafayette - New York NY) : Served alongside some great Dujac 1993, this was the star of the flight. More black vs red fruit, this was incredibly dense and charmingly textured at the same time. So complex, long and unfolding.

Still chasing the best bottles that I have had of this. Another good but not great, somewhat hard and rustic bottle. Might have showed better if not next to a great '91 Ponsot. And needs more time. Bottle was in very good condition, and perhaps just too young. 93+

Henri Jayer & Disciples (15 USW) : Explosive nose with intense stemmy aromatics and huge spice. Huge projection out of the glass booming red and blackberry fruit with wood spice and stem detailed expression. This was one of the last wines of a marathon night, so the notes are falling short, but this was a spectacularly and highly expressive showing, even in the context of some of the greatest burgundies of all time. Very impressive.

Zachys La Paulée "Warm-up" Dinner (Sessions at the Presidio - San Francisco CA) : Thankfully this was decanted since it was closed and mostly inaccessible to start. Air was kind here. Black cherries and berries with woodsy spice and layers of complex flavors. Incredibly tasty. Upside from here.

Pre La Paulée Zachy's BYO Dinner (Sessions at The Presidio - SF, CA) : Terrific full, layered aromatics of rich black cherry, meat and spice. Amazing richness and purity. Bright and lifted with great spice, meat and herbal accents. Terrific and in a great spot.

Red candied fruit. This bottle has not yet blossomed to display the full array of spices on the nose, nor the minerality on the palate. 92-93
