Jean-Michel Alquier, Bastides, Faugeres

First time with this vintage, last tried the 2006 back in 2018. Lots of dark red, brambly fruit on the nose that follows through to the palate with a touch of spice rounding out the finish. Bought EP so cant recall how much I paid ~£15 maybe. Nice food friendly wine. Not sure if it has the stuffing to be worth keeping too much longer.

This is still improving, year by year. Heavy deposit - I should have let it stand for at least a day. Beware your reaction on first opening! This had no nose and tasted acid and rotten. After two hours the aroma was developing and at four hours it was lovely. The acidity had softened and the fruit and spiciness were dominant. Good finish and length. A full-on, gutsy Southern French red. Dark garnet red - no sign of ageing. Nose: leather, liquorice, lilac floral (!), spice. Medium-full to full in the mouth; supple tannins, a little peppery. Good length, great wine

Lot of sediment, decanting essential. Black garnet red. Rich nose, good leather backbone, damask rose. Smooth tannins, soft leather, complex. Good length. Good wine, drunk in company, notes don't do it justice.

Significant sediment No sign of ageing; dark purple red. Rich plum pudding nose, sweet leather, tomato paste, bovril umami, white pepper, a hint of menthol. Medium-full to full bodied; velvety tannins, red berry fruit, a little prickly acidity, some barnyard. A fairly 'full on' wine. Excellent length with dried flower pot pourri.

2012 vintage

Damask dark-purple red. Nose: sweet leather, overripe plum & bramble fruits, white pepper, mace spice. Medium full body: prickly tannins and acidity; plum, red grape juiciness, pepper. Good length. Needs a little more time ?

2015 vintage

Very, very dark purple red. Rich, thick nose: sloes, damsons, leather with fresh plum at the edge. Full body, styptic sloes/elderberries, cocoa (not chocolate), some bell pepper. A very serious wine. Great length, dry black fruit and hyacinths (!).

2012 vintage

Deep plum and blackberry fruit, black olive and herb some nice sweetness offset by sharp acidity. Mildly drying tannin in the background, this has great structure and a long finish. A fairly noticeable presence of Brett though, affecting all bottles of the 6 case, which really does take the shine off

Deep purple-red. Powerful nose of sweet leather, liquorice, spice (mace/nutmeg/white pepper), mulberries, loganberries. Full-bodied, velvet leather, fruits des bois, pepper, very full softening tannins. Great length, perfumed, rose pot pourri. A powerhouse Southern French red.

2012 vintage

Mature. Garnet colour. rubber and tar on nose, plenty of fruit, plummy,still delicious, fading a bit on the second day. interesting that a Languedoc wine can age so well.

2000 vintage

Drank over 4 days, notes from 4th day. Well this is my last of 12 bottles of this wine...enjoyed all of them and am sad to see it go. Wonderful value and a very interesting wine. Despite being a syrah blend the nose reminds me of a fragrant Burgundy...cherries and roses and loads of them despite this hitting 10 years and being opened 4 days ago. Decanted 2 hrs, served at 16C. Drank this over 3 days and was surprised because after the first day I felt it was missing some fruit from previous tastings, but the second evening with this the wine was drinking very nicely. I'll get to my remaining bottles in the next year or so....very silky tannins, long final and wonderful south Rhone character.

Decanted 4 hours served at 18C. Consistent with previous notes....not much of a nose tonight (drank outside with barbecue), but this was superb from the moment it hit the palate. Lovely silky tannins rising alongside an increasingly complex mid-palate and a beautiful lingering finish. Best showing for this wine yet 50+5+12+16+7=90.

2000 vintage

Dep cherry red, still youthful. The nose is warm rich fruit, stones, chewy and spicy. The palate is similar; spice and pepper. Tannic this still has years in it. Good length and a lovely chewy wine.

Decanted 3 hours served at 15C. Similar to previous notes. The consistent feature is this wine seems to improve with open time and I found myself enjoying it most after about 2 hours into the bottle, with the final in particular becoming very impressive. I think in the future I'll open this wine 6 hours before drinking and see how I find it. A solid QPR and drinking very nicely now. 50+5+12+15+7=89.

Decanted 2 hours served at 13 C. No formal notes but enjoyable as previously. Perhaps wasn't paying enough attention but did not seem to grab me as much tonight. No score entered.

Decanted 2 hours served at 14C. Consistent with previous notes although tannins not particularly marked tonight. Very silky and nice finish. 50+5+12+14+8=89

2000 vintage

Decanted 2 hours and served at 14C. Clear, dark red with some bricking at rim. Nose is plum and blackberry with some hints of tar and a faint note of alcohol. Soft, silky texture with an ascending development of black fruit flavours and fine tannins that are well integrated and balanced. Long final. This wine developed nicely over the night as it warmed somewhat and I would serve at 16 or so in the future. Drinking nicely now. 50+5+12+16+7=90.

Well perfumed, a rich and plummy flavour and with a touch of dustiness. Quite hearty and full but well polished.

Full flavoured, a slight dustiness, big structure, thickness of fruit and plenty of grip. First of six and whilst ready for drinking will probably last for some time.
