Arguably Germany's (or the world's) greatest Riesling vineyard, but neither the greatest producer of Kirchenstck or the greatest vintage. This was slow to open, but did give nice minerality with a medium-full body. But no real expression of the great terroir here. Cellared since original release.

Final bottle of this, no cork problem this time and revealed was a perfectly aged slightly aromatic stone fruited nose , creamy integrated mouthful and that long finish, as with the first bottle this is old school riesling and beautifully put together, very enjoyable.

Magnum best bottle (Restaurant Holz und Feuer, Kirchheim, Germany) : Glass: Sophienwald Bordeaux From normal bottle. Pfalz version of a Riesling Spätlese in a warm vintage. Very well made, easy to drink, but lacks soul, tension, depth and complexity. Drink now or over the next decade. Will most likely not improve. 88-89

A completely collapsed cork ruined this bottle, it had leaked enough to reduce the neck by a good couple of inches and for the record was still drinkable but totally flat and exhausted, ah well can't win them all, though the cork 'problem' was over in Germany by this time I believe.

Medium gold colour. Pronounced and developed nose with peach, apricot, nectarine, ginger, honey, hazelnuts and petroleum. Pronounced taste of peach, apricot, ginger, honey, hazelnut and petroleum. Long and sweet finish. High acidity. Medium body. A very good Riesling Spätlese that has matured beautifully. Drink now or over the next ten years. Goes well with cheeses or fruit based desserts.

Dyp gul farge.

Cloudy, glass filled with burnt orange peels, so balanced and delicious.

Lots of stone fruit aromas quite a lot of the same in the mouth with a creamy feel with not to much acidity, a change from the screamers being produced now, very good balance and long very long, a very good bottle with more years ahead, but ready now, dare I say it, very much in the style of old school Riesling but with a modern twist.

En merkelig uklar farge. Som den har ettergjæret. Ingen feil med vinen. Ytterst elegant og lang. Fin syre Ingen petroleum. Passe moden. Tåler flere år.

Cold cream on the nose, floral notes, crushed stones and notes of yellow and white stone fruit. On the palate still a little tight. Great acidity, lovely intensity of fruit, lots of minerality. Very long and vibrant finish. Starting to drink well, but likely to improve further. 92-93+

Klar, strgul med hint av grnt. Fremdeles ganske fersk nese med lime, milde, tropiske toner, hyllebrblomst, sitrus og hint av gress. Moderat konsentrert, men intens frukt. Frisk, spisset syre. Sval sdme. Trr avslutning med lett, bitre grapefrukttoner. God lengde med mild mineralitet. Har godt av ytterligere lagring.

Rich, sweet and unctuous on the palate, mouth-filling but with limited nuance and complexity. After a few days in the fridge it became more mellow and developed an extraordinary finish that lingered in the mouth, in some sense more powerful and appealing than it was before swallowing. Worth getting again.

This is by far the best GG of this vintage of this domain. Yellow and white tropical fruits, beautiful balance between acidity and some sweetness. Many layers. A great wine. 94+

An Afternoon of Rieslings (Beautiful Wines, The Plaza) : Very good indeed. It was very interesting to try this next to the Rebholz - I thought the Von Buhl showed quite poorly at first, but this just grew and grew in the glass until there was little to choose between the two wines in terms of quality. They were very different stylistically though. While the Rebholz seemed to be more about minerality and focus, this was full on power. The …

Nice to have this side by side with the Rebholz - this comes across much riper, immediately showing its additional alcohol (13.5%) with deeper-complexioned quince, nectarine and peachy fruit accented by spices and the beginnings of developing smoky and fusel notes. There's a lot more richness and power here, a slightly viscous texture with a faint glyceral sweetness that's a total contrast to the stony austerity of the Rebholz. It's a little awkward on the back end initially, showing some …

Lunchtime Tasting chez Brad (Beautiful Wines) : This wine is fashioned in a supremely elegant style with lots of stuffing hiding behind the weightless palate. Interestingly this had hints of spice on the palate which added to the complexity. A very clean and fresh wine with excellent depth. I understand that this bottle improved tremendously over time with a stunning finish.

Tasted at a Von Buhl tasting in Velp (The Netherlands): We tasted three vintages from this vineyard alongside each other: 2003, 2004 and 2007. The 2007 was the best vintage with head and shoulders! It has a lovely minerality and (although young) already has a good balance, but this will only improve. It has a very fruity nose and is very elegant on the palate. This wine was extremely young, I guess this wine can be kept for 20 years …
