Kollwentz, Steinzeiler, Burgenland

Sehr dunkles Rubinrot, fast schwarz im Kern, sehr schmale Randaufhellung. Nase sehr dunkelbeerig, sehr extrahiert, leichte Hitze/Gummi - sehr 2012! Am Gaumen noch nicht ganz offen. Geizt etwas mit Reizen, ja, dunkelbeerig nach Heidelbeeren, Brombeeren, auch etwas Banane. Aber der Wein wirkt noch etwas verschlossen, die nächste Flasche in ein/zwei Jahren… Sehr guter Steinzeiler aber nicht ansatzweise in der Liga des 11ers…

2012 Kollwentz Steinzeiler. We had this wine with a 6-course dinner last Friday. Kollwentz's Steinzeiler never really disappoints. Bright red, smells of cherries and red berries with a slight note of cassis. On the palate, fine texture, slightly mineral, very harmoniously structured with a round finish. It's a lot of fun to drink. (92/100 - 17/20)

Tasted at a visit to Stanglwirt in Kitzbühl, Austria. Mostly red cherry fruit, mineral notes of pencil shavings and smoke, fresh herbal complexity, floral notes and an earthy base. Fine texture with the cab seemingly adding some tannic structure. But there was also notable heat and quite searing acidity.

Fine now but should be better in a few years.

OK, I have to say I was *very* sceptical about Austrian red wines before I tried this. Sure, the dry whites and the dessert wines from Neusiedlersee are lovely, but the reds? In the past I’ve found them very unenjoyable. This wine, however, whoa! What a gorgeous red, I am very impressed. At 9 years of age it’s drinking just beautifully. Well balanced, medium bodied. Some well integrated tannins there so could surely be enjoyable for quite a few years …

Lights out, such a great wine in a a great place now. Lighter body, high acidity, elegant, top

(Gr&Alex,GuarVal) (CS, Blaufr, Zweig) schwarzer Kern mit schönem roten Rand. Schwach ausgeprägte Kirsch-und Cassis-Nase. Am Gaumen wie eine Bordeaux-Cuvé, schöne Frucht und leichte Gewürze, ausreichendes Säuregerüst fein balanciert, voll und körperreich, aber fern aller „Marmelade“...

This comes along on silent paws ! Medium body . Cherry , wood and acid. Noteable tannin. But round and clean. Great freshness ! In the end some herbal flavour. Really nice austrian red !!! Drink

Tasted after 2012 Point and Setz. 80% Blaufränkisch plus Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon. Cooler nose, more herbal and spicy and in comparison a bit less expressive. Complex with great fruit, spices, tobacco, earthy notes. Lots of tannic grip on the palate, good acidity. Very long. Keep. 93-94+
