Opened at dinner served along 2005 Latour, 2019 Clos de Tart and Laflaive Meursalt 1er cru. More than held its own with the youngsters with much more mature complexity black berry, mushroom, leather, tobacco notes mix with a bit of sous bois. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Sounds like there is a great deal of bottle variation from other reviews. Guess I got lucky…

Second bottle. Almost dead. First bottle was decent, but did not made me have good expectations from the second bottle.

My expectations were suitably reined in, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good this was. This had rich, red, berry fruit, with plenty of tertiary evolution with meaty, gamey notes, combined with leather, piped tobacco box and other delights. While significantly evolved, in no sense was it on the downslope – it was just as good on day two. This bottle was singing, and had a decent finish. It also had Hermitage gravitas, and evoked memories of other more …

Brought to RF wine dinner in NYC, along with a 2001 Clos Des Papes, which we drank side by side. Dark in color, some bricking noticeable in glass. Nose of spice, leather and perhaps olives. Medium body, decent amount of dark fruit and sour cherries. Tertiary notes include leather, forest floor and a definite rusticity. This is slightly past its prime but much better than I expected personally, and I found it quite enjoyable. Some preferred the Clos des Papes, …

Tasted blind next to the 1995 (which wasn’t a lot better). Notes of earth, red fruit, lots of acidity on the palate but lacking the stuffing to balance it out.

Northern Rhone with bottle age (The Laundry, Brixton) : The best that can be said is that I went into this eyes wide open, knowing that this was a sub-par vintage immediately after the passing of the great Gerard Jaboulet, and so it proved to be. Not that it is a bad wine, it is just rather boring and has a rustic tinge that time seems not to have mellowed. Cork in tip-top condition, pours a dark red and the …

Cellared since release. Perfect cork. Decanted for two hours and consumed over the next couple of hours. Lovely spice box nose, soft and velvety in the mouth with tongue coating jamminess, sour cherries and some heat on the finish. Enjoyable. Better than prior bottles but still felt it withheld more than it was yielding tonight, with no rush to drink up based on tonight’s performance.

This has many more years to go in my opinion, it was excellent. I did not decant, I opened the bottle and drank it over 3 hours.

Tasted blind next to the 1099. Both felt much older than they are. Brick red with translucent edge. Nose is sweet with candied red fruit, notes of vanilla. I once again thought it was Spain. No grip and no structure. Lovely to drink but more like an old Rioja.

This is still drinking very well and tastes much younger than it would seem by the age. Certainly yes, comparatively it may seem like a lesser vintage at Jaboulet but unless you are doing direct comparisons or verticals it is still very much an enjoyable wine in and of itself. Still vibrant fruit and nice acidity that stayed strong through the 2-3 hours it was drank. Needed some air but was clean and no Brett.

Out of 7 bottles 2 have been very good, 3 have been ok to good and 2 have been for the sink. Last bottle was amazing, so silky with perfect maturity. Strawberries, mint and earth. Based on the case I'm drinking from these should not be held any longer. Drink up!

Tasted blind, a disappointing bottle. In its defense t was a last minute pop and pour but didn’t improve in the glass even after an hour. Did not take me to Hermitage at all, those it was Piemonte. Lacking oomph.

Much better than my last bottle. Plenty of fruit, a little smoke, leather, savory and smooth as anything. Short decant - only an hour or so.

From 75cl, a bottle of impeccable provenance, perfect cork, decanted 45 minutes, improved until final drop. A flat-out-fabulous bottle in perfect, peak maturity (unexpected, given recent CT TNs and my own mixed experiences of the 1997). Earthy, dark, sous-bois, balsamic scent. Medium-bodied, finely muscular entry. Vibrant, scintillating, electric texture from nose to tail. Bright plum acidity and a cornunucopia of dark fruit on the mid-palate; fine, residually tannic backbone. Minutes-long, throbbing, finish. My wine of the year so far (let's …

Four bottles over two years, all from great storage. The two most recent bottles have been very different from each other where the one before this was super elegant, fully mature, silky and extremly well balanced (94p). This however was dissapointment: Thight, tannic and quite bland. Over the four bottles only the first two was similar in development. To be continued..

Tasted blind. It gave a lot of vanillla at first, and this combined with the acidity sent me to Spain. Lovely red fruit here, with floral overtones, very fine but persistent tannins. Only after 30 minutes in the glass did it exhibit some white pepper. Really good.
