With mum n dad watching footy 88-90 points. Tertiary notes of leather oak blackberry blackcurrant tobacco black fruit vanilla plum earthy cassis cedar licorice coffee forest floor cigar box minerals fig, dried blackberry, Dried herbs and spice Glad I bought it approx $150 at auction. 2009 vintage

For a 16-year-old bottle, this is drinking noticeably older than expected. The wine is firmly in its tertiary phase, leading with earthy tones and a faint suggestion of truffle. Floral elements are largely absent, and primary fruit has faded into the background, offering only subtle remnants. The profile is more about evolution than vibrancy, prioritizing maturity and nuance over freshness.

2009 Château Kirwan Margaux ($80 in 2012). Sharp mid-garnet, rim variation, brick edges, viscous (13.5 alc.); red fruit, raspberries, mint, cocoa, anise nose; low-mid acids; mid tannins, softening; semi-long tart red fruit finish. 16.5/91.

Medium deep brick red, amber edge. Aromas of cedar, cassis, tobacco, cloves, nutmeg and coffee. Dry, elegant and fine structure. Dry, sanded tannins. Blackcurrant acids and black tea bitterness. Palate of prune, dried cranberry, cinnamon, pine wood, stock cube and charcuterie. A fully mature, medium bodied and yet surprisingly lively claret with fading plum-like fruit, elegant yet bittersweet acidity and a lovely spicy finish. Another fine Margaux 1983. Drink within 5-7 years.

Drank over two days. First day, closed and fair amount of tanin. Too early I thought. Poured 50% rather fast, corced and stored in refrigerator over night. Next day, totaly blossom. Smooth and balanced, can’t see this improve much more, drink now or within one or two years. Leder, cedar wood, red fruit. Purple red. Very smooth. Drink now but ventilate vel.

Bought from auction a case of 12, condition is pristine. High ullage and cork condition. Pronounced nose intensity with forest floor, barnyard, toast, smoke, charr wood. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Well aged Bordeaux. Drink now, will not improve further.

Felt that this had moved towards a tertiary phase, which surprised me. Quite aged profile, and getting a bit of funk.

A lesson in patience, or my lack thereof, as seems to be so often the case. Pulled from the cellar to stand up a few hours before opening, then decanted for sediment. The nose gave a burst of warm fruit on open but receded quickly. Initial tastes were flat, muted, gravelly with faint fruit but overwhelmed by graphite and earth. I was concerned it may be flawed. Decanted. Initially very weak on the pallet but with some air this wine transformed itself into a very solid wine for the vintage. The color was spot on with no bricking. It had a nice mouthful of fruit with subdued tannins and acidity. Short to medium finish.

2001 vintage

Dark ruby red/purple colour. Aromas of blackberry and graphite with floral notes. Dark red fruit and anise tastes. Very smooth with mild tannins. Paired well with steak and grilled potatoes/vegetables. Definitely decant due to sediment.

2009 vintage

Classic Claret! Pretty red fruit, maybe a tad dry, with some dog fennel, soil. Very nice, the kind of Bordeaux one could drink with every meal. Channeling 1981 a little.

Drank over several days. Medium garnet. Oak fairly well integrated. On pnp this was somewhat light weight in the 2009 context, medium (-) good acidity but not much depth. Fairly short finish. Ok. With (much) more air this gained more weight and creaminess but side by side with a 2010 Segla came across as a rather internationally styled Bdx blend without much Margaux typicity. Clearly preferred the Segla.

Beautiful bouquet of violets, roasted coffee, night flowers. Very Margaux...Dark in color, the wine teeters on blue because of the heft and weight, yet its not heavy in the mouth. Really wowed me for a good 90 minutes and then, I sensed a decline starting and the wine lost balance and started a decline. I still think it is lovely, but probably at peak. Drink

Dark fruit, limestone, bitter chocolate, pencil shavings and well integrated wood deliver an incredible example of a second tier Margaux wine. I love everything about this wine as it just enters a great drinking window. Good juice.

DnP. Medium dark red, yellow edged, 5.5. Wonderful mature complex bouquet, pencil, cassis, cedar, violets, colonial stuff. Harmonious palate, almost resolved tannins, h-A, m-B, elegant flavourfull finish. Drink now but no hurry.

Académie des Cinquante Claret Tasting (Restaurant Rijsel, Amsterdam, NL) : Tasted blind. Lovely warmth on the nose, light and bright palate, quite drying, cherries and berries, very tight finish, bay leaf. Marked by the heat.

2009 vintage

Gang of 4 in Covid19 times; Bordeaux; Margaux (@ RW) : Rustic bouquet with some stable impressions, smoke, cedar, vanilla, licorice and leather. On the palate red and dark berries, sweet spices, cedar, some pleasant sweetness, mild acidity and a good length. Beautiful wine.

I did not wait 5 years … Deep red, slight bricking. Black cherry, gunpowder, vanilla, oak, plum and jammy fruit nose. Black cherry, red cherry, raspberry, strawberry, oak, vanilla and pencil shavings taste. Deep fruit, mellow tannins that do retain some structure. Reasonable acidity.

First bottle from a case purchased en primeur. Stored since release in a 55 degree cellar. Pnp. Unlike other 2009’s in my cellar I found this aromatically clenched for the first two hours. Thereafter this slowly releases charcoal, cassis, briars, and lighter coffee notes. On the palate, the dusty tannins show up on the attack and accompany the chalky minerality, coffee, and charcoal wrapped blue fruits through the mid palate. Very pleasant. Drinking well. Nose - cherry stems and slight fennel. Color - ruddy purple. Texture - light, no legs, not syrupy. Palette - no tannin, low acidity, cherries, almonds, rhubarb. Dark ruby. Fantastic nose of blackberries and dark plums, which are prominent on the palate as well, with black tea and very nice sandalwood. Good acidity, round tannins, long finish. Tannins firm on the end, so it can age 2-3 years more. Such a good wine - unexpectedly. Drink now!

pop and pour really has improved over the last 7 years , veey smooth last bottle so drank over 3 days vacuum sealed between drinking colour dark red almost purple fruit is still there . Just hope my 2010's are as enjoyable

Tasted of Chateau Kirwan wines on Zoom, run by Auriol Wines, Hampshire, UK. Predominantly cabernet sauvignon. Low yields this vintage. Dark cherry colour, still looking very young. The deep red color not signaling 30 years old at all. Typical Bx nose with cedar, oak, blackberries. Nice viscosity and medium length on the palate, but lack complexity. Drink well, but I would suggest to drink up within next few years. 88-90P

Tired and a bit dull. Some funk and hints of orange but not much going on here.

Purple colour, thick legs. Some herbs on the nose, cherries, cedar and some Margaux perfume. Rounded with good depth. Complex. Mature but plenty of life in this still

Has still a certain ripeness, a soft impression and ripe tannins.

From Art's cellar. During decanting, the Margaux perfume came forth. Crimson in bowl and then some bricking to the rim. Margaux florals stayed with it supplemented by dark fruit. Surprisingly, the tannins were not quite done, but had resolved more than enough to make this wine enjoyable. Black currant, vanilla and a touch of acid in the finish made it a wonderful wine with the filet mignon and Bearnaise sauce. Probably can last another 5-10 years.

Tät mörkröd färg, tät kärna och lite tunn i kanten. En del mognad i färgen Stjälkig, lite stickig på näsan initialt. Kaffe och ceder samt mycket stall och skitighet. I frukten är det främst mogna körsbär. Helt okej syra, torrt och strävt med tanninerna på plats. Medium längd och relativt intensivt. Den här gången tycker jag det var bättre på näsan än i munnen. Ready for prime time drinking, the wine is round, medium/full bodied, smooth textured and delivers earthy, sweet, black cherries and tobacco with a sweet plum and cocoa note in the finish.
