Powerful, complex and profound. Broad-shouldered on the palate yet beautifully balanced. Opens beautifully over the course of the evening, with its peak still to come. An endless finish. A wonderful festive wine. About half the bottle was consumed and sealed with the cork. On the second day, the wine showed less freshness and was slightly disappointing.

Mini vertical 2008/2011/2013. Fresher than 2008 Lodovico - spicy, smoky and earthy with some floral notes on the nose. Very elegant on the palate - good acidity, nice tannic grip, creamy and generous with plenty of ripe fruit. Very long and vibrant finish. Drink or keep. 93-95

Wine Dinner #161 - Super-Tuscans (Urbane Restaurant, Brisbane) : Deep cherry red, this wine begins with an interesting nose of cherry, raspberry, touches of ripe tomato and a scented lift of rose and spice. The palate was initially quite unctuous and mouth filling with lots of ripe complex fruit character. However it did fall away quickly suggesting that some Merlot or similar may have benefitted the final blend.

Tasted alongside the 08 Lodovico and the 10 Biserno Bibbona. This wine seems closed down right now, especially compared to the massive 08. The producer assured a few of us that the 11 vintage is high quality and has great aging potential. On the nose and palate, dark raspberries, blackberries, black pepper and some bacon fat. The tannins and acid provide a firm grip and youthful structure that promise better things to come. The heat from its 15% ABV bothered …

Lovely notes of roasted bell pepper, tomato leaf, red currant, patchuli-floral notes; great structure and balanced rich body. Serious wine. 95% Cab Franc.

Summa15 Day 2 (Magré (Margreid), Alto Adige, Italy) : Deep dense core with bright violet rim; more subtle nose than the Il Pino, red currant, compost, green pepper; fresh acid, good structure and tannin; good life ahead of it, tasty.
