Surprisingly complex for a Federspiel, goes well with excellent food including venison (!), easy to drink but a good experience. Drink now or in next 12 months.

Under screwcap. Slightly off-dry, barely any development. Didn't have the exotic fruit that I sometimes get from riper vintages in Austria but instead it had lots of tart yellow fruit accompanied by an impressive steely minerality. Liked this a lot, a textbook Riesling. Just a shame this producer is so difficult to source here.

Nice, or overly elegant but complex fruits. Still a lot of acidity, could get more balanced within the next 2-3 years

Beautiful nose, tropical and citrus fruit with hints of slate and petrol. The palette is far more linear and citrus driven with a strong acid and mineral backbone. Not overly complex but very enjoyable.

Excellent dry Riesling wine from one of the top estates in the Wachau region. The exceptionally steep, southwest-facing Steinriegl vineyard (located in the village of Weißenkirchen, about 75 km west of the city of Vienna) represents a geological curiosity in the Wachau region ; its soils are composed of paragneiss and silicate marble, rarely found elsewhere in the Wachau. Bright straw-yellow in color with some silver reflections and an appealing nose with scents of white peach, green apple, lemongrass and …

Recommended by Felix, the (other) sommelier at Burg Vital. Opened alongside the Pichler 2008, which was much richer and creamier. This was the lighter and fresher of the two, but in no way lightweight or disappointing. VG.

Tasting, brief note. Green and yellow apple with subtle floral notes. While this is slightly simple, the flipside is that it's bright and persistent with a mineral finish I really enjoyed. Good now.

Easygoing and approachable dry riesling. Touch of tart fruit but good minerality. Finishes a touch hotter than I like though.

I spent all day today in this vineyard, doing some pre-harvest work trimming excess vegetative growth and tasting nearly-ready Riesling grapes. The Prager section of Steinreigl is a beautiful, isolated spot facing mostly south-west. There is a lot of wild thyme growing about, and sometimes thorny, mangled white roses on the steeper parts, as well as the occasional outcrop of marble dramatically jutting out of the soil. The plot spans several flat terraces that span down to a small creek …

The wine was fermented spontaneously in stainless steel tanks and spent four months maturing on the fine lees before being bottled. Bright, pale yellow-green in color and an attractive bouquet of white blossoms, green apple, …

12.5, very mineral driven, dried tea leaf, delicate white flowers, wet rock. Lean, focused, underipe white peach palate. Acid for 5 seconds, lingering. Nice alternative if we sell out of Knoll.

OMG. If the Federspiel is this alcoholic, how over the top must the Smaragd be?

Light straw colour. Intense aromas of apples, citrusses and tropical fruit (pineapple). On the palate concentrated, mineral, fruit-forward with nice acidity. Citrussy fresh. Long and pleasant finish with a distinct notes of grapefruit.

Nose is packed with mineral scents--chalk dust, gravel, etc. Some fruit does become apparent in the form of soft apricot, melon rind, and subtle citrus. Nose is laid back & nuanced, very intriguing. Tasting brings a different side, a very active personality. Front end has the fleshy white fruits but they're accompanied by an amped up acid core that, while bracing, is supporting the fruit rather than demolishing it. Midpalate on brings out lemon & melon tones but is really …

100% Riesling. Single vineyard "Steinriegl" is located in city of Weissenkirchen and consists of little to no gneiss rocks, comprised mainly of white marble and chalk. Fermented until trocken or dry. No chaptalization allowed. "Federspiel" is one of three Wachau specific quality designations for dry white wine: Steinfeder (light, racy), Federspiel (elegant, medium body), and Smaragd (ripe, full-bodied). Brilliant pale greenish tinge to the color with faint legs. Medium aromatic intensity with intense minerality such as flint, slate and wet …
