Lagier Meredith, Mondeuse, Mt. Veeder

New varietal to me. Zero expectations, other than I respect Mrs Meredith’s wines and soft approach. First impression on pour: this is a deep blue-red color, like freshly pressed blueberry juice. Bing cherry nose, with a faint pepper/woody bark note. Biased by the color, but blueberry pie as well. 2021 vintage

Angular and edgy at the start, with prominent alcoholic heat, but quickly developing into a lush, rounded, meaty, Rhone-style red, dark and rich and delicious. It's distinctly a New World wine, but there is nothing cloying about the dark fruit. This was one of the biggest bargains in California, and I'm sorry now I didn't buy cases of it when I could.

30 minute decant. Nose of red fruits and rose petals with an iodine note. Supple palate of black cherry, cola, white pepper, and lots of savory herbs. Acidity leads into a wash of soft tannins, dark chocolate, graphite, dark cherry, sage, and aged oak.

Another delicious wine from this fabulous label. We are savoring every last sip of Lagier Meredith, as they no longer are making wine. Deep, dark fruits, earthiness and well integrated tannins. This has a lot of age left. Decant!

Opened and drank for several hours. Poured remainder in 197 ml bottles. This is day 3. Opaque purple color. Aromas of ripe blackberries, just ripe blueberries, some herbs and bark. Palate w ripe blackberries and blueberries, bark, some earth and herbs. Full body with good acids that give the wine balance and full tannins. Nice finish of just ripe blackberries and tart blueberries, earth, bark and tannins. This is young and definitely from CA, not Savoie. But it's pretty tasty …

Pretty nose with bright fruit and an herbal/floral note. Equally fresh in the mouth with red currant, black raspberry and fresh fig. Distinctive and really enjoyable. Seems to have years to go yet, likely to be fine to 2030.

Dark, dark red. Dense. Stony. Blackberries. Tannic. Balanced. A really great wine!

2019 vintage

A sturdy, satisfying Mondeuse from the very capable winemaking team of Lagier Meredith. Very similar to Syrah, with a fullness and roundness that really make it substantive. Decant!

2 hour decant. Nose of purple flowers, cherry, dark spice and cinnamon stick. Smooth polished black plum palate hits quick and is followed by a line of fresh herbal notes, including bay leaf, sorrel, and peppery arugula. Polished tannins with a quick dash of black cherry, then a long lingering oak finish with a peppery and slightly bitter note. Enjoyable if not earth shattering.

PnP. Nose of cranberry, cherry, chaparral, and lemon thyme. Supple red plum, blood orange, tart red fruit, iron, minty bites, hint of tangerine peel. Supple tannins, loads of spice, red peppercorns, and lingering leather and uplift. Interesting the tasting notes are quite different than previous tasting but the score is the same.

PnP. Spicy nose with peppered salumi, rustic raspberry, and smoky oak. Mouth-coating blackberry and brambleberry fruit with fig pudding, asphalt, cooked black olive and strong minerality following quickly behind. Tannins roll it all up into a quick pucker then exhale black raspberry and rocky soil. Impressive.

Lively and likable. Good fruit, somewhat unusual flavor. The comparisons to Beaujolais are helpful, but this is also a California mountain wine. Distinctive.

Delicious all the way. Peppery and vibrant like a good Alpine example but with the warm fruit and sunshine of CA. A little grippy tannin and a brambly finish.

This is my first time tasting this variety, so I don't have a frame of reference. It was enjoyable as an experience, but not sure I'd go out and buy another bottle. The descriptions here are accurate-- savory, carbonic, structured, etc. There were some barnyard notes on the palette that disappeared with decanting, but it did develop a strange nose after a couple hours. Wilypod nailed it. Dark, almost black. Violets, carbonic-esque fruitiness, and white pepper on the nose. Palate dominated by savory notes, tannic finish. Kinda like a rustic Beaujolais with a lot more backbone. All the pleasure is on the nose right now.
