Albert Boxler, Gewurztraminer

On the sweeter side for a dinner wine — beyond off-dry but not dessert-level sweet (let’s call it Demi-Sec). Honey, lychee, ginger, honeysuckle, chamomile, bergamot — nice nose with typicity. Full bodied thanks to the sweetness, but balanced with acidity. We always pair a rosemary orange roasted chicken with gewurz and this one was a nice one.

A: medium gold N: Pronounced nose of gardenia, lilies, roses, lychee, baking spice, baked pear, honey, peach, ginger, grapefruit pith, bitter almond skin P: Medium dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol, pronounced intensity, full body, medium (+) finish .....just. C: This is a wonderfully rounded floral wine. The acidity is replaced by the bitter kick on the end which helps deal with the additional RS. The intensity is optimal, the wine complex (showing more than 5 descriptive clusters eg. citrus, pomaceous …

Golden and clear in the glass, some viscosity. The nose is dominated by rose and litchi, with some big red gum (the cinnamon). In the mouth, it has these aromas, but also peony and a pronounced acidity - really well balanced. There is also some pepper and a hint of bitterness. The former is good, the latter not so much. Still very impressive with really nice length.

This is the first time that I've tasted an Albert Boxler wine that I did not like. The 2020 Gewurtraminer is way too sweet for my taste. I little sip as an aperitif might work, but sadly this wine cannot be paired with dinner.
