Adelaide area wineries Dec 2024; 12/26/2024-12/31/2024 (Cellar Doors) : {375ml, screwcap, 21.5%} Murky tawny colour. Caramel, camphor, antique shop aromas. Warm, fumey, vanilla, burnt honey, follows the nose. Quite pointed, with high acidity, warmth on the full-bodied palate. About fully sweet, but balanced enough. Does cloying fractionally at the end of the otherwise long finish.

Consistently good. Like a 20 year old tawny port in style. Fruit, raisins, chocolate nuts. Very nice.

[an extra 12 years in my cupboard] dark fruit, pipagao, chinese herbs, rich, unctious and layered, with freshness. Went perfect with choc rum cake. Amazing stuff!

d'Arenberg with Chester Osborn (Strand Cellars, Croydon) : Aromas of rancio, saline, crushed walnut, toast, leather, a little fig, raisin, sweet spice, slight vanilla, cream. Juicy, saline, walnut (pickled says Chester), alcoholically warm, sweet and savoury spice, a little texture on the palate, fig, pleasant.

They call it Tawny, as in port, but it is made more in Sherry style, with blending up to 40 wines from 15 different vintages, predominantly from grenache and shiraz. Complex style, very concentrated, and with a beautiful acidity. Pronounced aromas of apricot, raisin, vanilla, dried blackberry, caramel, smoke, hazelnut, white pepper, black tea, cinnamon, marmalade. Sweet wine, high acidity, low tannins, full body, pronounced flavour intensity, long finish. 21,05% - @ Down Under tasting, Pinot

Another crumbly cork but a superb tawny. Fully of raisiny flavour, port like in the sense of a 20-30 year old tawny. Excellent again.

Reminds me of a 20 year old Tawny port.

As before, nice tawny with boot nuttiness and sweetness. This bottle about 18 years old. Crumbly cork again.

Another good bottle, sweet and about half way between a sweet oloroso and tawny port in style. getting on for 20 years bottle age here.

Very lactic, powerful and spicy. Hints of raisins and spices

Nice tawny on the entry but then too much spiced stewed fruit. Very hazy in the glass. Long finish though. 90 is technically generous I'm sure. 88 technical plus maybe 2 for some fun value. Would I buy again? Probably not.

As before, like a nutty medium oloroso. Nice.

NV but with some age. A sticker at the top of the bottle talks of prizes won in 2000 so probably about 15 years in bottle. Pop n poured, cork crumbled a bit. Sherry coloured. Nutty nose, nutty flavour, some of the sweetness has gone leaving a wine more like a medium Oloroso. Still nice and went very well with a blue cheese from Italy bought from a stall in Borough market.

Very rich and complex nose with walnuts, caramel and raisins. On the palate very very very sweet - 230g/l residual sugar! Much sweeter and consentrated than original tawnies. I don't mean in a bad way. This style is very pleasing and luscious. Very long taste.

tawny nose, walnuts, spice and a bit of acetone so sweet! some acidity (could do with more) but really very sweet WALNUTS! not subtle but delicious

Served at work Christmas lunch. Packed with caramel, raisins and nuts. Simply delicious in a pretty powerful package. I would bet it would be even better in 20 years.

Popped, poured, consumed over 90 minutes. Creme brulee, butterscotch, maple, walnuts, and orange blossoms vying for attention on the nose and palate. A little more acidity would have pushed the score even higher, but still excellent Tawny.

Wow! I didnt even know that d'Arenberg did this. The appearance is light tobacco coloured and it smells like Christmas in a glass! Marzipan, apricots, 5 spice and xmas pudding. The palate is sweet as you'd expect but it has a real depth with flavours of caramel, butterscotch and raisin. Beautifully balanced, smooth and sticky! @ d'Arenberg tasting with Claire Scott. West London Wine School.

London Wine Fair - day three (London) : Wow. Rich, pungnet wine - a fine nose that resembles Oloroso sherry crossed with port - lots of raisins, nuts and very sweet. Awesome quality.

The coloring was a medium amber. Flavors included caramel, toffee, coffee beans and leather. This was sweet without being syrup and went down smoothly. Surprisingly, there was sediment in bottle. It paired with the chocolate fudge cake reasonably well.

Amber with bright yellow rim. Moderately sweet nose, slightly maderized, slightly harsh at first, apricot and muscat notes. Good concentration, very decently balanced sweetnes, some minerality. Nutty palate, rather hot finish, lots of raisins. Plummy and creamy aftertaste with pleasant bitterness, good length. Neither the smoothest nor the most complex one at the tasting, but not bad at all and very reasonably balanced.

Amber brown color. The nose is all toasted almonds, dates and toasted wheat bread and barley sugar. Not especially concentrated but delicious none the less.
