Textbook Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir; this has aged nicely. Sour cherry and alpine strawberry on the palate. Tobacco, underbrush and earth/mushrooms on the nose. This is ready to drink and will maybe hold for another 2-3 years for prime drinking.

Delicate while tasty. Lovely pinot-nose with earthy, mushroomy notes now coming to the fore, red berries (raspberry, wild strawberries). Medium-bodied, quite light in the mouth with red berries, citrus and some wood. Tight, fine-grained tannins with mouth-watering finish. Very enjoyable and pretty, a few years in the cellar has made this wine more interesting. Still clearly a high altitude pinot which plays more on treble than bass.

HER (Hollywood Bowl) : 12.9% abv. Burgundy color with some transparency. Nose some earth and red fruits. Palate some nice density of cherry fruit, a pine note, appealing lightness. the pine note gives it away as Cali pinot, but it's restrained and balanced in a nice way.

A few years in the cellar have helped this wine along nicely. Bright red fruit (think cassis and sour cherry), nice acidity, and a helping of mushroom earthiness round this out into a very enjoyable coastal pinot.

Clean. And a bit generic. Nothing really sticks out.

Still quite young, so I'll expect this to evolve and with that possible score elevation. Color on the light side, aromas of violets, pomegranate, and a bit of beef jerky. Maybe some underripe notes on the nose. Palate isn't shy of acidity and, at this point, some tight tannins, which aren't too big to mellow nicely with age. A good long lingering wine. The label says pencil shavings and I tend to agree. Feel that this needs some time to …

A really interesting nose on this. Earth, incense, cinnamon. Would have scored much lower initially. Left open for 5 plus hours and this finally came to life. Good body, acid and didn't find the stems to overpower. Would buy again for the right price. Drink now with a good decant or hold.

New Year's Day 2013 Cali Pinot Blind Tasting : Medium translucent ruby. Big nose is exotic and complex with tons of stem character integrated with red fruits. Adrian called beets, which was spot on. On the palate this has an intense initial attack with red fruit and an elixir that is like liquified stems. Really unique and interesting. The mid-palate is more thin and the wine seems to fade. A re-taste after 9 hours and the herbal/stemmy intensity has picked …

Some blind 2013 Northern California Pinots to ring in the new year (Rich's, Chicago, IL) : Nose: There is a stemmier quality to the nose along with a red fruited base of berries, herbs, red florals, beets, and cherries. There is a creaminess to the fruits to boot, but the herbal base over-rides it at the moment. Taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity and silky tannins. The notes of red fruits, herbs, berries, beets, stemmy tones, cherries, and a touch …

Blind 2013 California Pinots (Chicago, IL) : Served blind. Cola and beets. What a weird one. Reminds a little of 06 red Burgundy. Slightly sugary on the palate, with the ripe fruit yielding a little bit of a candied quality. Fortunately this isn't super dense and extracted though, which is definitely a redeeming quality, or else I imagine this becomes a hot syrupy mess.

The '13 Savaria is lighter in body and alcohol (12.3%) than the '12. Had the '12 recently and the '13 is drinking better. '12 has a bigger body with alot of wound-up citric acid and green whole-cluster finish but can't make up its mind if its an experimental Russian River Pinot or something else entirely. The structure of the '13 Savaria better fits the whole-cluster approach: soft strawberry and wheat on the palate then fine tannins bring in the earthy …

Lioco and Sonoma Coast Tasting (House of Nanda - Chicago IL) : Perhaps this is too soon after release, or perhaps this wine is slightly too aspirational. Good red fruit with a nicely floral start. A slightly herbaceous character that I think might be from slightly too much (50%?) whole cluster given the level of fruit ripeness.
