Macauley, Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Dark red in the glass. Light bricking around the edges. Nose is dark fruit, leather and alcohol. This wine is hot at the beginning, middle and finish. It over powers most aspects of the wine, tannins are nice and at good point.

This sort of wax seal is kind of a pain in the ass. Sometimes they'll leave the top of the cork really dry, so piercing immediately crumbles the top, just from turning the screw. Bottom half was fine though, and was able to pull it out with an Ah-So. Aannnyway, decanted for half an hour - Nose is concentrated rose hips, raspberry, chocolate, cherry liqueur, licorice, cassia bark, and a bit of humidor. Drinking super well now. All the tannin has settled but it has maintained a dark, broad character showing loads of dark fruits and berries, tobacco, and cedar. It was worth the wait!

Had a 2010 Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer To Kalon the night before so was quite a direct comparison. While this is 0.2% ABV higher than the Paul Hobbs, this feels like it does not mask the higher ABV nearly as well. This is still surprisingly quite primary and fruit forward, and feels it could be kept even longer before better integration. There is some residual heat on the palate still with this.

Another nice wine for our latest Agelvis event. From memory as I didn't keep notes last night. Opened later in the evening so it didn't get sufficient decant time but enjoyed over 2-3 hours during and after dinner. Nearly four hour decant. Very very deep magenta color. Pecan pie (heavy on the pecan), blackberry, and mulberry on the nose. Smooth, dry palate. Soft, but present tannins on the longish finish.

Wonderfully fragrant. Bright bouquet. Great acidity. The tannins are integrated and grippy. Dark fruit abounds with a surprising freshness. The tannins are soft and supple illustrating a velvety finish that goes on and on. Fantastic.

Had this at a Macauley tasting. Definitely the wine of the evening, even though the 2005 was quite fine too. Clear, ruby, medium plus in intensity. The nose is clean, youthful and medium plus in intensity, with fresh black berry and bkackcurrant aromas.
