Still very intact and sound, just unfortunately out of balance: label claims 13.5% but I’m guessing 14.5%. Initial nose was horribly like rotten leather. Started out a little too cold but decanted and it opened up pretty nicely.

Decanted 3 hours before dinner that helped a lot to open. Nice mature nose with tar, ethereal and dark berries, on the palate earthy notes, medium+ bodied and long, balanced finish. Very classic Nebbiolo that would be hard to differ from a Barbaresco, 93 points for the nose, 91 points for the palate. Drink within the next 6 to 12 years.

First glass has a brisk acidity and classic Alta Piemonte tannins with rose and a touch of cherry. Two hours later it has filled out into dark fruit, tar and hot earth with tannins softening. This is a big wine for a Ghemme. Very good. Strangely reminiscent of a good cote de Beaune of a solar year whilst also having a cote rotie hint to the nose.

Large coravin pour. Gave it some air over too short a period of time. Medium to dark slightly translucent garnet. Nose has lots of earthy elements, roses, smoked bacon, tar and undertones of red fruit. Nice overall structure of acidity and tannin but modestly mouth drying. Palate has tobacco, tar, darker than red cherry, a hint of chocolate, and a touch of forrest floor. Finish is long and has a scorched earth quality. The fruit is still subdued and it …

Strong savory, herbal notes. Black licorice, deep black cherry, intense red currant.

The nose was dark, earthy and rich, showing crushed cherries with sweet herbs, and a hint of spiced citrus as notes of moist soil, and undergrowth developed in the glass. On the palate, I found soft textures which seemed to expand across the senses, delivering sweet and savory cherry tones with herbal and citrus hints, as brisk acids kept the entire experience lively, even as fine tannins mounted. The finish was long, as the wine's structure unfurled upon the senses, …

Trip to the real Nebbiolo; 3/17/2017-3/18/2017 (Northern Piedmont) : On the nose still a bit reserved with sour cherry, ethereal and slight barnyard. On the palate good concentration and structure, long finish. Great classical Nebbiolo made for aging, best to drink from 2019 to 2030. 92 to 94 points.
