Clonakilla, Riesling, Canberra District

A Xmas Eve toast to Santa, the reindeer and elves, along with everything else. Alluring gold with green tinges. Intense, brilliant nose. Limes, pressed white flowers, subtle toast, then a winning saltiness (is ‘salinity’ the new toast? I jest, and yet). A palate both long and with an ample body for Riesling. Dashes of flint. Quite delicious with plenty of lime, slate and mineral grip. A fine young Australian Riesling.

What a cracker. Crunchy green apples that make you pucker. Lemon licks, and sparkling minerality that comes in river stone, chalk and quartz (didn’t realise those things could sparkle like that..). Add slate to the mix when drinking on night 2. It has such drive. There’s no mistaking the confidence in this wine. There’s texture too. Some integrity to back it up.

On tour with Tim and Phil day one (Canberra Districts and Beechworth) : Lemon, green apple over lime, slight almost ashy herbaceous underpin. Medium plus intensity acidity, crunchy, green apple, slightly bitter on the finish. Simple. Hmm

Apple, lemon, purity. Great balance and ample length. Enjoyed with a restaurant meal so not noting all the details, but fully excellent.

A year on (plus a day) but looking fresher, more vibrant. Gorgeous soft gold colour. Developing nose. More buttered than toasty, perhaps honey too, overlaying deep preserved citrus flavours. The palate's long and true. Still fresh and lively. Cuts a decent groove that would make Tony Joe White get his Wah-Wah going. Lovely now but should keep cruising for another decade or so. Very pale white gold. Nose opens with briny seashells, citrus spritz, quinine bitters, zesty and fresh. Opens with crisp bite, sharpness, limes more than lemons, bitter and tonic water. Sharp, bitey and fresh, hints of sweetness in the background. Ok, becomes slightly insipid after a while.

Xmas Day lunch paired with the superb Cka 2012. Still only knocking on the door of maturity. Gold silver colour. After an initial touch of kero/light toast that faded away, a powdery nose, cosmetics, limes, minerals. Pure palate, clean, depth and line. More citrus, spiced apple (from below), with acid cut. Gorgeous gold green. Semi maturing nose. Lightly toasted, butter, bath salts, creamy almost, then with air, mandarin. Attractive. Needs breathing. Initially the palate started strong - rich, toasty entry - but seemed to wane, citrus and fine acid dipping on the middle and feathering on the back. Bright straw/gold. Limes dominate the nose with a hint of herbs. On the palate there's citrus and some minerality. Good acid. Drinking well but for me I would drink up in the next couple of years. A nice wine.

Hint of fading spritz on the palate, the flavours are yellowing to maturity, with spiced apple and vague citrus, not too much. Riesling Lunch (Frank's place in Matraville) : aromas of lime, kerosene, slightly dusty notes with a little saline herbaceousness underpinning this. With time meat, tomato leaf, sulphur. Sharply juicy, citrus, touches of green apple, slight alcohol warmth, it's also a bit skinny and linear. Hmm.

{screwcap, 12.5%} Stil a fairly pale straw yellow. Slightly mature palate of honey-tinged limes. The palate has bright, medium level but not harsh acidity, although the fruit is very yellow in flavour, rather flabby in some ways. Lively enough on the palate, medium weight, dry and zesty. Decent enough, isn’t really complex enough to be truly memorable but it’s a decent, dry riesling, fair with food. Yet I feel I should have been more impressed somehow. Might keep a while …

Excellent wine. 12.5% alc. Colour: very pale straw Bouquet: ripe apple and lemon, whiff of kerosene Palate: as bouquet, perhaps with mandarin and lemon peel, and aniseed as label suggests. Very lean, clean style, with good acid and very dry long finish. Tasted in a Riesling taste-off with Bradon and Trish. This was the leanest driest of the 4 main wines , compared with Seppelts Drumborg 2013 and 2 Grossetts, a Springvale (Watervale) and a Polish Hill River 2010. January …

Nose is a little closed with just freshly squeezed lime juice and whole ripe stonefruit. The palate is wonderful, a powerful line of acidity carries the fresh summer fruits with loads of lime, some sourness balancing any sweetness as it works its way through your mouth. Almost totally void of the kero notes that seem to be part of most SA riesling. Very good, has all the signs of something that should age very well.

This bottle was even better. Everything just worked so well. Clearly has developed very well. Nicely balanced. A real shame this is my last bottle.

{screwcap, 12.5%} Still paleish green. Intense lime juice nose, still youthful. The palate is powerful, with lime and lemon-scented flavours, a drying not-quite-raspy acidity, and a medium/long finish with a talc-like texture. Very appealing wine which should age well in the next decade.

Young, fresh and zesty. Drank this wine with freshly shucked oysters and Abalone. Worked wonderfully well with the fresh seafood. I prefer my rieslings with a bit more age generally, though my partner prefers them young. Great experience.

Another nice wine. Slightly sweet fruit up front, the finish is drier. Good acidity and structure, so will improve with more time I think.

Very dry and acidic as one would expect, but none the less great drinking with its strong green apple, lemon zest and spices. Will balance out in a few years and mature to a beauty.

Very disappointing to me when put against Australia's best Riesling producers (Crawford River, Granite Hills, Bests, Frankland Estate, etc,) Simple tart lime flavours. Could be good in time.........

Annual Riesling Tasting 2014 : Ripeness is apparent on the nose with tropical notes bit also has some spice and lemon pith. The palate has the same richness to it, but fine acidity helps to lift it.

Clonakilla winery (Canberra) : {screwcap, 12.5%, A$28} Pristine, youthful nose of pure limestone and stainless steel. The palate is dry, acidic to the point of sandpaperiness, with pure lime-like fruits, clean and ripely-sweet, with a distinctly tart texture. Light-medium in body, and with plenty of front and mid-palate presence, this finishes crisply medium length and dry. Delicious and should last years.

Very Good. Pale Lemon. White flowers and lime on the nose. Palate is all citrus, though still a little hollow. Medium (+) acid, medium intensity and alcohol, medium (+) length. Plenty of room for development, and should probably be left for at least 5 years before sampling again.

Night 1 - pretty tight and acidic. Nice, lime and steely flavours but slightly hard work. Didn't touch on night 2. Night 3 - acid had loosened it's grip and it was slightly spicy and easier to drink - more lime coming through. Think this is a long-termer.

Great balence and length. Not convinced its going to be a very long lived wine (10 years max) special bouquet.

Floral, mineral, chalk. Great balance between minerality and fruit. Good length.
