2023 Athens Wine Event; 12/8/2023-12/9/2023 (Athens, Greece) : Tasted blind. We went with a 15yr slightly modernist Barolo. Mesmerising in the way that we love Xinomavro and especially from Dalamaras ( his VV is in our mind the best Greek Red ever made) . Subtle, elegant, well evolved but still on the fruit and really shows the greatness Xinomavro can achieve made well and allowed to age as much of it is drunk far too young. So ever so beautiful …

Wild strawberries, cherries, porcini, eucalyptus, earthy and leathery. The mouth is austere with more porcini. A bit tannic. Food wine. Pair with lamb in the oven with herbs. I like it. Has that nebbiolo d'alba character.

Unlike my recent experience with this wine, this 07 was such a beautiful wine. It begs for decanting cause when popped its very firm. Moreover the wine needs filtering; I have never seen so much sediment. After an hour of aeration the wine is fresh and lovely with plenty of red fruit a touch of tomato leaf, barnyard cedar and sweet spice notes. The tannins remain firm and slightly drying but overall this has an excellent balance, given that the …

A completely different wine from the one I tasted a year ago. While last time it seemed to me to be almost past its best, this bottle showed freshness and excellent structure capable to pull through much further. Nose is very expressive with an old-style-Bordeaux-like funkiness. Manure and horse leather but very beautiful! Palate is medium bodied but flavorful with firm tannins that cry for food, balanced acidity and good length. A very pleasurable wine!!

Medium ruby. Expressive nose with red cherries, raspberries, sundried tomato, some herbal notes along with just a touch of spice. High acidity in the mouth as expected with quite softened tannins (not expected; they get a bit drying at the end but in the mid palate they are ok. Long finish. At a nice stage to drink now.

This is one of these wines where you have the impression that the nose and the palate evolve in a difference pace. The nose is evolved bordering to overmaturity, with stewed tomato, ripe strawberries and leather. On the palate however the wine is still primary and disjoint with harsh tannins and high acidity. I do not think that this will get any better since the fruit will start fading and the tannins might become even dryer.

Surprisingly it was fully mature at such a young age for a xinomavro, even past its best! Aromas were interesting and complex however with leather, rubber, smoke, prunes and tomato paste. A rustic wine for sure, with drying tannins but I like this stuff. Judging from this bottle, drink soon!

This has a nice xinomavro nose of tomato alongside currant and raspberry fruit with smoky notes, but tannins are extremely aggressive and drying making it almost undrinkable at this stage. Acidity is quite high and aftertaste is long. I strongly doubt it will ever soften enough...

Expressive nose of tomato juice, strawberry and floral scents. Medium-bodied and obviously overextracted with harsh, drying tannins that make it almost undrinkable at this stage. Dry, dusty aftertaste. I don't no if time will be able to tame this tannic monster.

Wine Illusion a celebration of Xinomavro 16/3/2012. I have always liked this winery's Xins although some consider the wines to be rustic. This vintage should change their mind. First sniff is VERY Pinot like with earth smothered red fruits, sous bois & herbs. Sweet entry, dusty cherries, plums, fruitier palate than the nose would suggest. Lovely smooth yet firm tannins, lovely acidity and great fruit.

Medium- ruby with garnet rim. Quite evolved, meaty and leathery with spices, herbs and underlying primary red fruit. Mostly old oak. Well defined in palate with zesty acidity and robust/ripe tannins that need time to soften.

Naoussa v Super Naoussa Tasting @ Le Petit Sommelier 11/16/2011 Blind tasting. Dark garnet. Dusty plums, cherries, olives & tomatoes. Medium menus body. Mouth puckering harsh tannins, sharp dusty fruit on palate, medium + acidity. Somewhat disjointed. Surprised when the wine was revealed as I usually like this estate's Xins a lot & 2007 was a good vintage for the region. Needs time to settle down.

Deep burgund red. Bright edges. Some red and black berries on the nose, some oak. Seems to be allright concentrated on the nose. The palate is a disappointment. Bit warm, sloppy fruit, has some acidty and tannins, but not enough to structure it properly. The tannins are a bit harsh and pointy. A short finish with little fruit and mostly a tanninic finish. Also doesn't improve with time in the glass.

Red, orange/pink rim. Vegetal (tomatoes, olives, herbs), sweet spices, fruit (berries, plums).Miedium bodied, big tannins and acidity vibrant but smooth. Definite savoury umami feel. Lovely red & black fruits followed by olives & tomoatoes on the mid palate. Lovely.

100% Xinomavro (Ksee-no’-ma-vro) The predominant grape variety in Macedonia, meaning, "acid-black". The wines made from Xinomavro are known for their superb aging potential and their rich tannic character. This wine is planted on an organic estate owned single vineyard and spends about 12 months in older French oak barrels. I would really recommend decanting this wine or leaving it open overnight before drinking. A pale garnet color with moderate aromas of rose petals, baking spice, black tea, dried cranberry, and …

Still tannic and in need of a few hours of breathing before it becomes smoother and welcoming. Nice Greek Xinomavro. 50+5+10+15+7=87
