Monthly Tasting Group HWS #088; Switzerland. (by DJ) : My first white Merlot as far as I can recall. The bouquet is a bit aromatic and clean with white fruits, fennel, anise, spices and some vanilla. On the palate white fruits, good fresh citrus acidity, limestone minerals and a touch of bitterness in the finish. Overall a tasty and pleasant wine.

A private lunch (Restaurant Bord'eau *, Amsterdam, NL) : 12.8% ABV, fermented in new French barriques, aged for six months on new and older oak. Initially a very oaky nose, but with air the minerality, fruit and flowers emerge, good depth; soft and juicy but lively, with a good stuffing of fruit and a lovely balance, nice weight; good length.

Half. Still quite a pale straw. Mineral, slightly creamy nose with a touch of underlying ripeness. Positive attack, quite clean, and less obviously oaky than previous bottles. Very like a borgogne blanc from a decent producer. Good. ***

Half. Pale. Ripe and quite rich nose, hinting at the barrique treatment this white merlot has been through. Attack quite fresh though it does show some weight and then a light an minerally finish. back on form for me after the 03 that seemed a little too oaked and flabbly. Good. ***

Half bottle. Pale colour. Good, slightly smokey, mineral attack, quite lean and linerar, opening up to a more rounded mid-palate and decent length. easy to drink but there is some complexity here. Strikes me as a decent village burgundy might. Very decent and held up well across three evenings. ***

Very pale colour, barely a hint of yellow. Floral, fruity nose with mineral and a wet stone element. Quite full attack, seems a theoretical cross between a viognier and a chablis. Some almond, melon and slightly more tropical fruit flavours come through with a touch of weight and richness from the oak but this is a return to form after the last vintage I tried (03) which was an overripe oaky mess.
