Chateau Gloria, Saint-Julien

Chateau Gloria Exploration (Burwood) : Medium to heavy brown 7.5/10, still a body of red in the middle but it's mostly brown now. On the nose it's a little stinky, red fruits, cherry, a little floral violet notes. On the palate it's a little sour, there is some red fruits there, blood, stones. Interesting. Body is light medium, finish medium. Tannins have softened but still has some unobtrusive drying.

Coravin fun - Chateau Gloria/cellartracker in the flesh with ninetails (My place, Burwood) : From Coravin. A little porty note, orange peel. Initially, herbaceous, sour plums and brambles, dusty spices, touch of caramel and Christmas spice with aa smidge of cranberry, biscuit. An almost peppery note joins the other flavours implied by the nose, tannins are talc textured and super persistent, carrying the flavours long on a cedary tray. Pleasing.

A touch more faded than my last btl, but still.compelling. Unfortunately, paled in comparison to the 01 Las Cases tasted alongside.

Pop and pour. Cork totally fell apart, even with a durand. This btl is fading but still a solid St. Julien. Nose of soft cedar, dried blackberry, and a touch of earth. On the palate: dries blackberry, vanilla, soft barbecue, ok acidity, very round and elegant, completely attenuated tannin on the finish.

Beautiful wine after about an hour decant, and continued pretty steady for several hours tho aroma diminished. Still cherry flavors, with deep earthiness. Very smooth and long mouth taste. Color brightened and lost aging look after several hours airing. Cork broke but decanting necessary anyway due to sediment. A treat!

I had limited expectations for this wine from a friends cellar on a fishing trip. It was decanted because the cork broke. Light ruby, expressive nose, long elegant finish. This wine is fully mature but not close to over the hill and it was excellent.

West London Apocalypse Survival Team New World vs Old World Dinner (Two sites in leafy west London) : Lovely - definitely past its peak but still in decent shape. Saline, iron, raisin nose, very little fruit character left. Palate was shockingly bright/acidic for age of wine - in a good way. Long finish of the same notes as on nose. This was my first very aged bordeaux and it was a good one!

This surpassed my expectations. The fruit had faded a bit, but still made its presence known. The nose was darker and rich, with tobacco and chocolate. The palate had cherry with tobacco, tomato, and cedar. The amount of acidity was surprising. Maybe I’m being nice because my expectations were low, but it was still pretty good. I wouldn’t wait any longer, though.

Day two. Significant drop off in tannins and a sulling if acidity in spite of using a Repour preservation cork. Raisin fruit more pronounced, port-like in flavor, though lacking the body. I’m still very happy.

Surprising fresh acidity and balanced tannins. Long finish. Dark cherry, dark chocolate, slight tobacco. I admit I’m blown away.

This is the second glas os Tue bottle. Had the first a few days back (coravin). Very enjoyable. Opens up with wet forrestfloor mushrooms and a slight note of old cellar in a less good Way. Dissappears after 10-15 min. Fruit is present but in the background. Present and nice structure with soft tannins. A bit Metallic on the end - but again this translates nicely into lead/pencil lead after 15 min or so.

Opened and drank after 15 minutes or so, no decanting. Needed the Durant to open the soft cork. This wine is on the tail end of its life. Color is pale, a lot of brick. Fruit is short-lived, if at all, and the tannins and acids are gone. Enjoyable as an older BDX but not up to the other older BDX we've been drinking. A little Corky upon opening but after decanting really opened up. Great fruit still with a classic st Julien finish. Excellent!

I have had this is the cellar for so many years and was afraid to open it because I thought it was just too old. Wow what a surprise. There was a deep ruby color, with no bricking and hardly any sediment. There was still ample fruit with a touch of vanilla. I decanted for 45 minutes. What a treasure.

Fully mature, but not over the hill. Opened and consumed straight out of bottle, no decanter necessary. Smooth and velvety, paired well with foie gras and beef medallions.

Very good bottles (3), both 1983, nice fruit, smooth a bit short and fainted on the end but great old Bordeaux taste. We started drinking after 1hr decanting and it was even better at 2 and 2.5hr.

French funk, saddle leather and graphite, just what the Dr expected, some bricking but to be expected.....old Bordeaux never dies but ages gracefully......

44th birthday supper at Cafe V - very little bricking around the edges/has held up very well for a 32 year old bottle - not very much on the nose, but good, mature red and black fruit mixture on the palate, medium to long finish - very enjoyable, but was probably more complex 5 to 10 years ago - not bad, considering Wine Spectator rated it an 83 in 1992

Red ruby color earthy nose w tinged of mint on the edges herbaceous... Big full medium body in mouth alive well structured balanced tannins still perky upright hitting full range of palette with medium to long range at mid palette Red cherries currents with guinea hen parsnips peas taste turns to warmer brown spice cleansing acidity at finish which is moderately long in mouth and bouquet of spicy licorice fragrance. Very pretty wine characteristic st Jules grounded.

Most developed bouquet with mushroom and dried fruits. Medium body with good strength on palate. Fruit was still driving the palate nicely. Medium plus finish

Nose plum purple and red fruit cherry cedar tobacco. Palette cherry tobacco, mint, mushroom, forest. Finish: soft tannins, acidity weak no bite curvilinear structure . A comforting old wine whose seen better days but nevertheless gives a lot of pleasure . Good for mid-week drinking. Note: cork was dried out, decanted and rebottled
