Gil visits the Châteauneuf (Châteauneuf-du-Salil, Albany) : A nice showing, rich peachy and tropical fruited flavours up front that turn tarter and more citrussy on the back end, accented by honey and high toned spiciness. Intensely rich and sweet as I'd expect, but it needs more focus and acidity to reach the tier of really great Eisweins. But this is very solid, even if not anywhere near the masterpieces Hans-Leo made when he was winemaker.

Dinner with Gil B (Châteauneuf-du-Salil, Albany, NY) : [Pop & pour.] Subtle honey and brown sugar in the nose. Exquisite in the mouth. Long complex finish. A great match with the Bayley Hazen blue cheese from Jasper Hill Farm on Berkshire Mountain Bakery Cherry Pecan bread. I wish I could drink this all night.

Jeremy's Riesling Dinner (Hawthorn) : Half. A lovely amber colour. Deep and creamy on the nose, with some strawberry - no wonder it matched the dessert so well. Good fun on the palate, with a sour yoghurty flavour, almost chevre-like, married to intense, bracing, barely-ripe mango. Beautiful long finish, grippy and piquant with lime. I'm sure people have told me that Eiswein doesn't age well, but here's a strong counterexample.

Fill level was a bit low, and when the capsule was removed, there were signs of seepage. The color was sound; not too dark. Wonderfully complex plate of ripe orchard fruits, florals and some tropical fruits. The finish showed a bit of softness; I felt that the sweetness in this bottle overwhelmed the acids. Could have used a bit more energy and zest. Still, quite enjoyable.

These just keep getting better. On the nose: peach, lime flower, a suggestion of petrol, this has such a wonderful nose, but then on the palate, it steps up a notch: fantastic acidity, great salinity, lime, herbs, so sweet and savory at the same time. And 8% abv...this is disappearing too fast. Glad I have one more.

A bit of mold under the capsule, cork saturated almost to the top, came out easier than I was expecting. Made me worry this could be a bad bottle. Luckily no! Deep dark yellow but not darkening into orange/red. Sweet body, brown sugar sweetness on the nose and taste. RS is noticeable but balanced well by acid throughout. Rich robust body from front-palate through mid-palate. Sweet fruit jam/syrup flavors on the finish (lemon, orange, peach, tangerine). Stood well to a …

Maybe my best btl so far. Pop and pour. Lovely nose with loads of peach, lime, flowers and the slightest suggestion of a yeasty richness..or maybe flecks of petrol. On the palate, peach, lime, some vanilla, good richness..then acidity straightens out the richness and moves in a mineral direction. Good fruit and acidity on the finish. This btl has plenty of time left, and just keeps getting more interesting.

Dinner with Eric and Susan G. : Ripe notes of yellow peach, orange with a hint of the sweaty honey and toasted almond. The palate shows true eiswein colors - bright, with gooseberry and red currants, richer toward the back, bringing in candied lemon and lime. really fresh - drinking like a bright auslese, but with a dollop of lemon cream on top.

Pure peach and a hint of petrol. Different than my previous bottles: more savory on the palate, with just a suggestion of sweetness. Great texture. Yum. Day 5. I've been drinking this little-by-little, and it is just so good. Today, orange marmalade and a hint of petrol and mint on the nose. On the palate, noticeably sweet, but good acidity keeps it in check. Not even the slightest hint of oxidation yet.

Viscous golden. From 375. A bracing nose of quince, alfalfa, honey and morning dew (ok i forget the nose. tbh, but it was sweet and improved with air for sure) Upon warming up a bit, ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS combination of fresh granny smith and golden delicious apples with a baked crust. I know, i know-- you'd think that cooked apples might taste better with the smell of a sweet flaky crust and you, sir and madam, WOULD BE WRONG. LONG, Sweet …

Just perfect with melon. Beautiful mineral nose with loads of lemon/lime. On the palate, vibrant acidity with more minerality and a touch of salinity. A hint of sweetness made this perfect with melon, but it would easily hold up to spicy food as well.

Maybe its bottle variation, but this bottle was very much alive and kicking (in contrast to what was observed in the last note posted). On the nose, a nice mix of herbs, honeysuckle and a slight whiff of petrol. Still zippy acidity on the palate, showing a good amount of wet stone and peach. Nice viscosity, and while it falls of a bit quickly on the midpalate, it finishes with a nice tangy zip that lingers for a while. I …

I like it a bit more than a couple of years ago. More than its stablemate, the Erdener Treppchen. Still, its best days seem to be behind it. No staying power. Faded in the bottle and the acidity showed jus a touch of its former presence.

Ripe peach, lemon curd, apricot, wet stones. Great nose but disappointing on the palate. Lacking harmony, it just doesn't come together. There is a sourness aspect (not acidity) that overpowers the residual sugars resulting in a disjointed finish.

Aromas of tropical fruit and citrus all glazed with honey. Good acidity with fairly good concentration. Should gain depth with more time, but I wanted to open an Eiswein since I spent Thanksgiving with a couple of dear friends who love German wines like I do and for our Thanksgiving dessert I made an apple pie with a pate brisee and figured it would all work well, which it did.

A Thursday Night Embarassment of Riches (Weygandt Wines - Washington, D.C.) : I always welcome a Christoffel Erben riesling to a tasting, and this 2002 showed quite well. Vibrant peach on the nose, hints of petrol and honey as well. Smells young. The palate shows nice balance between fruit and acid. Lovely white peach and lychee, along with minerals the first signs of petrol. More of a boisterous wine than an elegant one, but it's delicious.
