Grifone, Sangiovese, IGT

Fruit forward prune aroma, earthy prune taste. Tart tannin. Ok balance for value wine. Good with pasta and marinara sauce.

Initial cherry vanilla nose. Dry balanced tannin, a little tart on finish. Ok with pasta.

Not-your-average-wimpy 5$ wine. This one has something to it. Bit harsh at first with tons of fruit bombarding the palate. Definite acidity to it leaning towards the balsamic. Finish is a bit strong for me- but the tannins could perhaps be subdued by your standard puglian fare. Overall interesting, great value. Will try again with some food to attempt to tame the finish.

Unlike the Grifone "1967" and the Primitivo, both of which are fairly good value wines, this started off very rough. Barely any fruit and almost brutally rustic. With time it did open up and become friendlier, delivering some characteric strawberry fruit. Still, it remains the most basic of Sangioveses, very simple and very dry.

I guess they don't call it Chianti in Puglia. Whatever they call it, this tastes pretty good. It is very red fruit forward, and possibly a little bit sweet. The color is magenta with a beautiful tending towards pink color at the rim. The nose is mostly red fruit with some violets in the background. Medium bodied. Very soft and pleasant on the palate.
