Maison Leroy Mazis-Chambertin

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 4/12/2019-4/13/2019 (Chicago, IL) : Not the greatest vintage, but this was a really nice Burgundy. Ripe, but nicely balanced with a great earthiness and bright red fruit. Very nice concentration; this is a fairly clean wine. It's not mindblowing, but the condition here is good, and this is probably drinking as well as it ever will.

Nose of darker fruit and tarry, meaty accents. Good black cherry fruit is round with excellent concentration for the vintage. Very clean and polished. Medium intensity finish with spice and meat.

Burgundy with Dinner (The Bristol - Chicago IL) : Pristine bottle, ullage 0.5cm. Open approx one hour before serving, then consumed over 2 hours with dinner. Color is very age appropriate for a wine almost 30yo, while the aromatic start came across as younger. Moderate black fruit with moderate spice and trace sauvage hints. Same on nose and palate with slightly firm structure throughout. I'd have liked a little more concentration. Wine barely changed at all over the 2+ hours …

Other comments that this was drying out were not apparent in this bottle bought at auction from the Grace cellar. Outstanding nose of cherry and earth. Medium color and body. Great concentration of sweet cherry on the mid palate. It does show signs of age and should be consumed now. I had it with Mussels in a saffron sauce and it paired well. Not great but good.

Martin Weiner Chambertin Winetasting Dinner (Chez Weiner, Westwood, California) : Light medium red color with clear meniscus; solid dried cherry and tart red fruit nose; mature, focused, dried cherry, raspberry and red fruit palate; long finish
