2022 Felton Road Chardonnays and Pinots with Winemaker Blair Walter (K&L Wines, San Francisco) : Hardly any reduction here and some floral notes. Slightly lighter color. Leaner with higher acidity than the Bannockburn. Less tropical although there is a dash of caramel. Lower wood imprint, excellent focus. I really liked this. A step up without much of a concomitant rise in the price point.

100% biodynamically farmed Mendoza clone Chardonnay harvested between 16th and 24th of March. Whole bunch pressed, fermented spontaneously in French oak barrels, full MLF. Aged in French oak casks (4% new) for 16 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in September 2023. 14% alcohol. Youthful key lime green color. Loved this. All about class, not power, very Burgundian minerality and flintiness; reticent on day one but bloomed to full glory on day two. Show's not over yet so hold or drink, and give it lots of air.

Sheer class in a glass, just about everything that I look for in a New World Chardonnay. This had real finesse rather than any sense of power or depth or heaviness that would result from lots of oak, barrel fermentation or just old age. In fact, drinking really well now. Beautiful balance, no sense of sweetness, all in all arguably the most elegant Chardonnay we have had from NZ, paired very well with pan fried turbot.

Struck match, Apple on the nose. Good acidity on the palate making this very crisp. Very enjoyable. Just lacks a little complexity for my liking to take this into the 90s.

Aromas of tropical fruit, pears, oak, popcorn, match struck. Rather generic chardonnay and I think the acidity seems lower than I remember from other vintages. Too sweet for my taste. Good but not great.

Benchmark Aussie Chardonnay (Australia) : Marmalade nose and lean palate. Much hyped producer in New Zealand but again I don't get it? Lacks any flavour just acidified juice, lean and tough. Yet again can't get excited about NZ Chardonnay.

Open already. Nose with sweet notes, ripe pear, stone fruit, mineral, ice-bonbon, some herbs as well. No oak. On the palate about the same. Not overly complex and a bit on the sweet side. But very good, and maybe develops even better: 89+

Light aromas of oak, pears and citrus zest. Taste is surprisingly sweet and with relatively low acidity. Drink now rather or keep, but not for too long. Very different from the 2013 which has much more of acidity and complexity. Poured one glass day 1 and then discovered a much better balanced wine day 2. 90-91p.
