Wow, what a wine. Aged beautifully. Had the best traits of an aged Bordeaux or aged Barolo.

Still surprisingly young-looking. A pretty, semi-translucent crimson in color, with some slight bricking right around the edge. Attractive aromas of earth, sweet tobacco and crushed dark berries on the nose. Medium-to-full bodied and quite elegant in style and weight. A burst of ripe, sweet raspberry fruit immediately envelops the front palate. This is superbly balanced, with a lively acidity. Amazed at how much raspberry and cherry fruit character this has retained after all these years. Shows wonderful depth and intensity …

Dark cassis flauvors on the nose, the palate full and extracted but not overtly so, ample dark fruit and cassis, pine needles, dry herbal and sauvory notes, mocha, presence of oak and tannins but in a supporting role, polished international style which may lack terroir but I find this attractive, still youthful and on its way up but drinking well already now.

Massive Tuscan blend(Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon). Opened and decanted. Allowed to breathe for 3 hrs and perhaps it could have used a couple more hrs. Heavily extracted, mocha, dark fruit and earthy notes. It needs another 3-5yrs in the bottle.

70% Sangiovese, 30% Cab. Sauv., aged 16-18 mos. in oak. Med (+) ruby. Med (+) aromas of ripe red fruit, plums, blackberries, red flowers, forest floor, spice. Dry, with med (+) acidity, tannins and alcohol (actually 14%). Full-bodied, very well balanced, with a very smooth mouthfeel and med (+) to pronounced flavor intensity and a long, persistent finish. This needed 2+ hrs in decanter to soften the tannins. The blend follows the fashion of 70/30 ratio - sangiovese/CS, offers abundant black fruits mixed with coffee, velvety body, delicious and easy to drink once spends enough time in decanter, however a bit too polished and international style, I would prefer to feel more intense sangiovese presence.

13,5% alcohol. Developed and moderately deep cherry red color with an aged brick red-orange hue. The nose feels somewhat sweet and moderately developed with brooding aromas of wizened black cherries, some tobacco, a little bit of ripe dark fruits, light toasted oak spice and a hint of sweet baking spices. The wine is rich, ripe and supple on the palate with quite full body and juicy flavors of ripe black cherries, earthy spices, some wizened dark fruits, a little bit …

Another of my Italian singletons. Decanted for 2 hours (virtually clean). Full bodied stewed plums and dark hedge fruits, a touch of vanilla, integrated oak, smooth earthy tannins and a classic bitter cherry acidity, fully integrated, for balance. Probably needs another year or so to show at its very best and should be good to the end of the decade. Potentially 90?+

Deep, dark garnet in color with clearing at the edges. Forward, fragrant, attractive and complex nose of dark fruit aromas of cherries, blueberries & currants with earthy/dusty overtones, cigar box notes of cedar and tobacco, leather, dried herbs, cocoa and toasty oak undertones. Medium bodied, with good concentration of balanced, smooth textured, complex, ripe dark fruit flavors of sweet cherries, blackberries & plums with earthy, dark cocoa, spices, herbs, minerals and some toasted oak. First one of these in almost 16 months. Still a youthful-looking dark, opaque magenta in color, barely lightening at the edge. As each time before, the nose is gorgeous. Beautiful, powerful aromas of ripe raspberries, earth, leather, flowers and a hint of vanilla fill the glass. Noticeably better on the palate now, this has also added a bit of weight since last time. Decanted for 6 hours, and tasted blind against several top notch Super Tuscans. This wine held its own against the best of Tuscany, and at a fraction of the price! Many believed they were tasting Ornellaia or Sassicaia. Currant, allspice, tobacco notes on the midpalate. The tannins were seamlessly integrated in the wine, which ended with a beautiful, smooth finish. A high quality wine at a very reasonable price...it does not get any better than this!

Black cherry, blackberry, with a bit of vanilla and earthiness on the nose. Black fruit with a touch of prune on the palate initially, softening to a mid-palate of vanilla and a slightly bitter medium length chocolate finish. Good acidity with medium tannins. Nice silky texture initially, that turned a bit chewy after a few hours. Complex enough to make it interesting, but I really wish some of that earth on the nose would have come through on the palate.

Exactly what I expect from a Tuscan San Jo blend. Lots of grape on the nos, characteristically dark almost cocoa on the plate. A moderately long dark fruit finish. Excellent. Somewhat tannic right now. I bought two bottles, one is being drunk right now, the other is going away for a long, long time.

Double decanted, little sediment. Fruit, cinnamon, and musty nose, no legs to speak of. The wine has nice red fruit, raspberry mostly, faint acid, almost no tannins, medium finish. Smooth, complex. Probably at the end of its drinking window, doubt there is much to improve with further aging. Drink up! After 2 days the wine evolved with greater depth and complexity, gaining floral notes and ripe plum intensity.

First one of these in exactly a year. It is definitely coming along. Not quite as impressive on the nose this time, but much better on the palate. Still a youthful looking magenta in color. Earthy, attractive aromas of berries, flowers, vanilla and spice. Full-bodied and velvety in texture, but not heavy. The good news is that it's not showing toasty oak. However, it's still a modern styled wine with no sense of place. For the first couple of hours, it hardly showed anything, maybe some soft black fruit that was insipid on the palate. It became more interesting at about four hours of air, when it showed a rounded, tapered, polished beam of fruit that I find in so many modern wines (it made me think of Bryant Family Cab tasting …

Lovely aged Super Tuscan. Tobacco and leather nose, with florals after a longer decant. Plenty of fruit left, but dry enough to pair nicely with food - in this case, a garlic and rosemary pork roast. Secondary notes are herbs and smoke so this was perfect.

1997 was a very good year so I had had this bottle for a while before I wanted to experience it. It was ready to drink - deep ruby color and black currant offset by notes of leather and spices. It may have improved few more years but its on its peak now. Well structured, balanced - soft tannins and pleasant and moderately long aftertaste. I would buy more If I'd find them anywhere.
