Magical and in the perfect sweet spot right now. All you can expect from a mature Comtes. Rich, toasty, vanilla, excellent structure, luxurious mouthfeel. Acidity still going strong, but mellowed down. If you have this in your cellar, pop it, you are in for a treat!

Wow, this was pretty special, toasted brioche with butter and honey but a clear line of acidity keeping it really fresh, so much flavour but weightless, absolutely fantastic

This ended up being WOTN by consensus of 17 bottles drank, with all bottles averaging, so a very big compliment to the label. Had the luxury of tasting side by side with a 2012 Taittinger, 2002 Gosset Celebris (My personal WOTN), and a 2003 Dom Perignon. The 2012 was obviously more electric, the 2000 was calmed down really allowing the fruit to show it's horsepower. Decent amount of mousse remaining, just enough to keep it very enjoyable. Zero signs of …

BYO lunch Loca (Arnhem, NL) : Always a treat to taste such old champagnes that are still (very much) alive! Next to the obvious tertiary and oxidative notes (mushroom, truffle), still fruit left as well. Very long. 93-94

Los Angeles La Fête du Champagne Afterparty (Marino) : Fully mature and just clinging to life / effervescence. Cinnamon and savory spices, salted caramel. I kept circling back to this and I think I liked it more than others. A vintage of CDC I’ve never had before. I’d say drink now if you’ve got these. 93- Afterparty - Too hectic for decent notes.

Northern Rhônes at Noreetuh, this time with magnums : Last had this about ~10 years ago and noted that I thought of it as a "good, not great CdC" - but I find myself liking it a lot more now, where there's plenty of savoury creamy and faintly nutty development around the bright citrus and pear fruit and sweeter vanilla-butter notes. Compared to the '07 that was poured alongside, this comes across a little gentler, without the same intensity to …

(Udtryk, Cph.) In a wonderful place right now. Nothing gained by cellaring further in my opinion. Bubbles are present but fading. Good acidity which balances the fruit well. Rich a fat and a real pleaser. '99 is a good year.

So perfect right now — big big almond cookie full of richness and still surprisingly fresh. Slight hints of mushroom but otherwise feels like it has 10 more years in it. Could get lost in the toasty richness.

Outstanding mature champagne, retained a fair amount of freshness, especially regarding the hot vintage 1999. Very serene and rounded champagne, definitely on the older side with lots of marzipan, almonds and cream on the nose. Fairly light/medium gold colour. Even creamier on the palate but with a decent zesty touch and slightly bitter fruit flavour. Very composed throughout the evening with an outstanding balance of aged aromas and acidity.

For our wedding anniversary Fresh and elegand nose of citrus, iodine, tulip stem, oyster and white flowers. Some low key toast/brioche as well. Still some mousse on the palate and again the fresh seashore and flowery feeling, rounded out with a touch of vanilla nd cream. Elegant and sophisticated. Very good lenght. This is drinking increadibly fresh and young. The only thing giving away its true age is the fading mousse. Will last another decade easily, probably longer if you're …

In a perfect spot, this is fully developed and an absolute delight. Not over aerated, this settles in the glass, and shows incredible depth on the palate with notes of buttery brioche with great acidity and precision, and a perfect balance on the finish.

Scent of lightgreen yellowish crop, nature. In empty glass comes tones of light gunpowder. I really like the scent. This is a champagne you almost like to scent more of than to taste. Taste of green apples, crop, hay, nature, citrus. Tastes much younger than a 1999 bottle should taste. Has a very unique taste profile, but can be perceived as somewhat flat and confined in its taste register.

"No Country for Old Champagne" (Chicago, IL) : Along with a few moments of the 1969 Cristal, this was my favourite of the old Champagnes this afternoon. It's like a CdC but with 2-3x more dosage than nowadays. There's something very old-school about this -- over a half century too late, but this comes across as the style of Champagne that Jay Gatsby would drink, in that opulent, baroque style. Despite the intense sweetness (this was probably sweeter on the …

Huge, expressive nose of shortbread, croissants, demerara, soft white fruit, pear, almost tropical notes; broad, rich, expansive palate; soft, smooth texture, perfectly integrated; complex and weighty yet still refreshing; near-infinite finish with a citrus peel tang. Lovely light golden color, fine bead in the glass; aromatic, lovely blend of citrus and brioche, showing some mature character at 24 years but not oxidative or nutty, still quite clean; palate is medium-bodied, exceptional mousse, again lovely blend of clean lemon-lime and a richer brioche, balanced medium alcohol (12%); medium to medium-plus finish with some citrus. Well balanced, traditionally-made, Comtes de champagne, at an excellent stage of maturity though honestly I think this would easily last another 10 years. …

Taittinger Comtes 2000. Stor vin. 95p

Last bottle back in 2018 felt more or less fully mature but this still feels young! Intense acidity, very little tertiary notes, just hints of nuts and orange rind. Chalky, acidic and austere, if going from this bottle alone the 1999 Comtes is nowhere near ready. But then again, the 2-3 bottles before this felt either at top or slightly over the hill. Wine! You just never know! That old saying “there is no good wine only good bottles” still …

1983 vintage horizontal with >20 wines, mostly from Bordeaux. Key observations: 1/ Acceptable vintage for Champagne with DP over-delivering, 2/ Laville Haut Brion is a masterpiece among the whites, 3/ Bordeaux is going strong at 40 years of age with stand-outs Latour and Margaux. 4/ No need to chase any Napa’s from the vintage, 5/ off-piste Italians kept up impressively with Soldera an undisputed medalist. Tasting note: Nice aging notes of Sherry and fine oxidative aromas give away the age. …

From magnum. Excellent colour and good amount of bubbles for a wine of this age. Very mushroomy on the nose with hints of honey and brioche. There was also a lifted note (that I didn’t like) but it eventually blew off. Completely surprised me but in a good way. I've never thought much of the 2000 vintage which to me has always seemed a bit less expressive and yet not quite as likely to manage the age. This made me reconsider. The wine is still incredibly fresh. Bright. Easy drinking. Not as complex or quite as interesting as the '98, but much younger and perhaps it just needs a lot more time to show itself. It was very lovely.

Taittingers Comtes blanc night (Noize, London) : Incredibly, painfully young - transparent in colour, tasting more youthful than even the most recent release (2012) alongside it. But missing the development and depth of fruit you'd hope for in a wine at this age. I'm not sure it'll be great Comtes, but it will certainly last another 10-20 years so hopefully the tertiary aromas give this wine an extra level of interest.

Brought by KM for his birthday dinner. No notes. Start off with a bang as this came off not as a 24 year old champagne rather one nearly half its age. Super fresh, great citrus and bits of green fruits with maybe some shell? very good now but will be better when it picks up more of the oxidative nites - and still maintains its energy. Was a great.
